SGA Gets Jazzy at Jefferson Landing
The first visit of Senior Golfers to Jefferson Landing was the first event hosted after the start of the pandemic, in August 2020. The past three years have been years of change, but the Senior Golfers came together again at Jefferson in enjoyment of all the best things that the North Carolina mountains have to offer.
The event opened with drinks and dinner on the upstairs patio, overlooking the picturesque Jefferson Landing course. It was an honor to welcome newcomers Jay Breaux, Kathy & Rusty Ruckstuhl, Karen Otis, and Mo & Rick Spada, who traveled to Jefferson from Lafayette, Louisiana, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal by Executive Chef Tom Jankovich, who spoke with the group about his interesting journey to Jefferson Landing -- through Wisconsin, Virginia, and Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Three good days of golf, and three more wonderful meals by Chef Tom followed, for a delightful week overall. A fun culinary event was the unique Pasta Buffet by Chef Tom -- exciting and delicious as each SGA member chose their favorite homemade pasta, choice of lobster, shrimp or cheese, and different sauces.  Truly -- it was an especially wonderful meal.

The event closed out with awards on the patio, followed by "Scallops & Lobster" by Chef Tom.  Event Winners at gross were Mo Spada & Jim Harrenga.  "Rick and I have felt very welcome here at our first SGA event," said Mo, who traveled to the mountains from Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  "I really enjoyed our time here,  and especially the beautiful golf course.  It was great to be in the mountains when it still is very hot at the beach, and we look forward to joining the group again soon.
The final day of play was Jim Harrenga's birthday.  Although after two days of play he was trailing Ken Rabalais by three strokes, he invoked his Disco Birthday Luck, and was able to finish with a one-stroke victory.  At the fun awards banquet, Jim quoted the verse from his birthday card from his wife, the very proper Jane, which cannot be repeated here.  For more information, please contact the office and we will put you in touch with Jane & Jim.
Net winners were Jane Harrenga and Danny Pole. Runners-up were Ken Rabalais and Karen Otis. Winning Best-Ball Team was Ken Rabalais and Ken & Sarah Young. Second place team was Janie Risley and Kathy & Rusty Ruckstuhl. Third place went to Jay Breaux and Bob & Es Cummings.

Close to pin winners were Jay Breaux, Bob Cummings,  Jane Harrenga, Jim Harrenga, Karen Otis, Ken Rabalais, Mo Spada, and Ken Young.  SGA putting contest was won by South Dakotans Jane & Jim Harrenga. Second place went to Cajuns Jay Breaux & Kathy Ruckstuhl, and third place team was North Carolinian Danny Pole & Texan Janie Risley. Kicking it up a notch best dressed were Kathy Ruckstuhl and Rick Spada. Congratulations, everyone!
A dramatic conclusion ensued as a once-in-a-lifetime award was given by fellow Cajuns Jay Breaux and Ken Rabalais to esteemed golf weatherperson Rusty Ruckstuhl. This accolade was for his excellent prediction throughout the week. Although extremely heavy rain greeted the SGA group the day before they were to play, Rusty assured participants that all was going to go well throughout the remainder of the week, and thrillingly, what he predicted came true!

Church of the Frescoes

Tucked deep within the rolling hills of Ashe County, two quiet and simple Episcopal churches house marvelous works of art. North Carolina native Ben Long ventured to West Jefferson in 1974 and painted amazing frescoes in two local churches. Today, the endearing work by Long has made the ‘Church of the Frescoes’ one of West Jefferson’s most popular tourist destinations.
After his studies in Italy, Long used North Carolina locals as models for his 'Last Supper' fresco and painted in the traditional style of paint on wet plaster. Today, both Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs and St. Mary's in West Jefferson house Long's magnificent, lifelike work.
SGA members enjoyed exploring the West Jefferson area, the quaint downtown, the Barn Quilt Trails, and the Church of the Frescoes, as well as other sites and the beautiful mountain landscapes.
