It has been shared across our counties that there are very low WIC redemption rates at both the grocery stores and the Farmers Markets. Most WIC Families are eligible for $40 Farmers Market Booklets per eligible person in the household to spend on Fruits and Vegetables at the Farmers Markets. FoodWIse has been collaborating with the Bilingual Digital Media Specialist with the State FoodWIse team to create marketing materials to support WIC families in familiarizing themselves with the process of utilizing the $40 WIC booklets on Fruits and Vegetables at the Farmers Market.
FoodWIse staff in the Central Wisconsin Region are planning for the development of a Farmers Market Collaborative to bring market managers and key leaders in the region together and build a support system around markets in rural communities where resources and capacity is limited. Total Reach: All of the farmers markets in the "Central WI Region" will have the opportunity to be a part of the collaborative.
FoodWIse staff have created an exhibit at the Waupaca Public Library highlighting Food Justice. This exhibit brings attention to the four pillars of food security: opportunities for economic security, robust federal food and nutrition programs, strong emergency food network, and vibrant, accessible, and affordable food system. This exhibit brings to life the hardships that residents of Waupaca County and the surrounding areas are facing.
Did you know that 19.5% of children in Wisconsin face food insecurity? Food Justice will provide information and resources on this topic, and help visitors learn how YOU can be part of the solution.
