Renee Manworren secures NIH grant to continue research on Sickle Cell Disease

CONHI Elizabeth C. Poster Professor Dr. Renee Manworren received a federal grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for “Modeling Inter-individual Differences to Address Pain of Sickle Cell Disease (MIDAS).”
The NIH award, which is a five-year grant in the amount of $4,995,953, will assist Dr. Manworren, CONHI Professors Dr. Feinuo Sun and Dr. Mari Tietze, UTA Engineering Professors Dr. Jay Rosenberger and Dr. Chengkai Li, and more than a dozen other researchers from across the country as they seek to transform care for those living with Sickle Cell Disease.

Two UTA students elected to
TNSA Board of Directors
|
The Arlington Nursing Students’ Association (ANSA) sent two delegates from CONHI to attend the Texas Nursing Students Association (TNSA) Annual Convention in Austin from October 1-4.
Two campus-based BSN students - Rezina Dhakal and Susmita Simkhada - were elected to the TNSA Board of Directors. Dhakal was elected to the position of TNSA Nominating Chair, and Simkhada was elected to the position of TNSA Northern Regional Director.
CONHI Clinical Assistant Professor Lucas Farris served as an advisor to both students.

Breast cancer survivor leads awareness efforts in Abilene community: Coordinated by the UTA media relations team, Zhaoli Liu (CONHI) shared her expertise on breast cancer with KTXS, the ABC affiliate in Abilene. Dr. Liu emphasized the importance of prevention, highlighting regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and healthy lifestyle choices. KTXE San Angelo shared the story.
Many children seem on track–but struggle with motor skills: Medical Express and MSN.com shared a UTA news release on Priscila Tamplain's (CONHI) research, revealing that even children who meet standard developmental milestones may be falling behind in age-appropriate motor skills.
The Long Game: Coordinated by the UTA media relations team, Radiology Today published a multi-page feature in its October issue highlighting the Arlington Study of Healthy Aging. Professors Michael Nelson (CONHI), Crystal Cooper (College of Science), and MRI technologist Chase Johnson (CONHI), provided expertise for the piece. Dr. Nelson noted the uniqueness of the study, saying: "We are looking across the entire body from head to toe."
Arthritis pain rising: How state policies matter: Feinuo Sun's (CONHI) study that investigated how state-level policies—including minimum wage laws, Medicaid coverage, other welfare programs, and education levels—affect pain outcomes. MSN.com, Medical Xpress, and Mirage News shared the findings.
