Miami welcomes new students to its engaged community of learners through the Summer Reading Program. In this important tradition, now 38 years old, we underline those activities we value most as a community: critical engagement with ideas; close interaction among faculty, staff, and students; and reading, listening, reflecting, talking, and learning as characteristics of active, responsible citizenship. As your introduction to the types of dialogues in which you will engage with other learners at Miami, the Summer Reading Program asks all new students to engage with a text during the summer and to return to campus in August prepared to discuss it with fellow students and others in breakout sessions.
Participation in the Summer Reading Program is your first assignment as a university student. Your willingness to take the assignment seriously and to participate actively in group discussions in August may have important influences on your subsequent achievements as a Miami student.

If you have any questions or concerns about the policies, feel free to reach out to the Office of Community Standards by calling 513-529-1417, or direct your questions to a Residence Life staff member when you return to campus in August.

Learn. Lead. Build Community.
Participate in a Miami Bound Pre-Semester Program
Come to campus early for a pre-semester program! Miami Bound programs present opportunities for new students to engage in learning, leading, and connecting to Miami and other new students before fall semester classes begin. You can enhance your orientation experience by continuing to build community, learn about campus services and resources, and get to know other new students. You must have attended a June orientation session in order to be eligible for a Miami Bound program. Move-in for students who do not attend Miami Bound is Thursday, August 22, and is earlier for those who do attend Miami Bound. Miami Bound students will move into their assigned residence hall rooms at the start of your selected program. These programs are optional and may require an additional cost to participate.
