The GW Center for Faculty Excellence recently launched an enriching writing development program — The Quill and Quirk Writing Program, led by Dr. Zareen Zaidi, Associate Director for Education Research and Scholarship. The program is designed to support faculty groups in their scholarly pursuits and aims to help faculty enhance their academic writing and research capabilities.
Over two intensive face-to-face sessions were held in Ross Hall, where participants engaged in dynamic learning experiences focused on developing writing skills for medical education research, ethical use of AI tools, and building a collaborative community for scholarly writing. Attendees prepared for grant submissions and received expert guidance on research best practices. The cohort will continue to meet monthly for ongoing collaboration and support on methodologies like statistical, qualitative, and survey design.

Pitfalls and Potentials of Navigating AI in the Learning Environment
This session is designed for healthcare researchers who want to know more about using AI tools in a productive and ethical way in their research. Attendees will learn how AI works, what AI tools are available, and how AI tools can–and cannot be–used in a research capacity as they navigate the boundaries of AI’s ethical and technical limitations.
Session Objectives:
- Define what AI is, including a basic understanding of large language models and how they are trained.
- Identify what AI tools are designed to do and what their limitations are.
- Distinguish situations where AI may or may not be useful.
- Explain the difference between types of AI tools and how they can be applied.
This series will equip you with the latest tools and techniques for integrating AI into your academic and professional endeavors. Exemplary faculty and staff from across GW will lead these workshops to discuss the intersection of technology and academic medicine, with a special emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
