Mongan ReflectionsFrom the Director
| |
Fundamental to the purpose of the Mongan Institute is to be an incubator for science that makes a real and rapid difference in healthcare delivery aimed at reducing health disparities. This core purpose could not be more evident this month as one of Mongan Institute’s faculty leaders, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, was selected to be the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As a scientist and prior Co-Director of the Medical Practice Evaluation Center (MPEC) within the Mongan Institute, Dr. Walensky conducted groundbreaking research on the economic evaluation of HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment policies as a senior member of the Cost-Effectiveness of Preventing AIDS Complications (CEPAC) team. Her 2006 analysis in the Journal of Infectious Diseases was the first to determine the survival benefit of HIV treatment in the United States. In 2017 she led a study demonstrating the clinical impact and cost of achieving 90% HIV viral suppression in the U.S., and in 2019 she testified before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform on the value of medications for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), medications which are both highly effective and very costly. She is currently serving as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at MGH, and among her many leadership roles include past Chair of the NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council, acting as an adviser to the World Health Organization and UNAIDS, and as an expert on Governor Baker’s COVID-19 Advisory Board. In her new role as Director of the CDC, Dr. Walensky will oversee a staff of over 10,000 and a budget of $12 billion, supporting programs in immunization, infectious diseases, environmental health, disease prevention, injury prevention, and public health preparedness and response. The CDC could not be more fortunate to have Dr. Walensky’s vision, expertise, and passion for advancing population-based prevention at the helm.
In the meantime, building on decades of work assessing the cost-effectiveness of different approaches to preventing and treating HIV, the MPEC team at the Mongan Institute has applied its expertise to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the leadership of Dr. Ken Freedberg as Director and Dr. Ingrid Bassett as Co-Director, the MPEC team has built on its simulation modeling expertise to develop the Clinical and Economic Analysis of COVID-19 interventions (CEACOV) model. Among the many examples leveraging this model include: demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of screening adults in Massachusetts led by Drs. Neilan and Ciaranello; assessing the impact of different strategies for managing COVID-19 among sheltered homeless adults led by Drs. Baggett and Freedberg; a study of testing and prevention of COVID-19 on college campuses led by Drs. Losina and Freedberg; and an analysis of approaches to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa led by Drs. Reddy and Siedner. Finally, under the leadership Dr. Bassett, a multidisciplinary team at MGH has developed a detailed clinical registry of over 1400 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 to support team-science efforts evaluating risk factors, and the acute and long-term outcomes of COVID-19.
Scholarly research has often been rightly criticized for being too siloed, too incremental, too theoretical, and “too academic” to make a real and rapid difference when solutions are urgently needed. The research on COVID-19 by MPEC and by the entire faculty of the Mongan Institute is one of many examples proving that it can be otherwise.

Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been selected by President-elect Joe Biden to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As Director of the CDC, Dr. Walensky will play a key role in containing the coronavirus pandemic, especially with vaccines on the horizon. Adjoa Anyane-Yeboa, MD, MPH, Awarded MGH/American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant
| |
Adjoa Anyane-Yeboa, MD, MPH, was awarded the MGH/American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant for a project titled "Improving Community Access to Colonoscopy for Colorectal Cancer Screening – A Pilot Program." Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates at community health centers (CHC) are far lower than the national rates for average-risk adults. CHCs serve a large proportion of racial and ethnic minorities and low-income patients and face unique barriers to CRC screening with colonoscopy. The aims of this study are to 1) develop a web-based/digital application platform to allow CHCs to schedule patients for colonoscopy at MGH and 2) assess feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the web-based/digital application platform at a single community health center.
Dr. Anyane-Yeboa is an Instructor of Investigation at the Clinical and Translational Epidemiology Unit at the Mongan Institute, an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an Assistant in Medicine at MGH.
