Literacy Is Life-Long Learning
| |
Meet one of our longest-running tutor-student pairs. William and Irene’s mutual respect and love of learning have kept them learning together for 9 years!
A decade ago, William, who worked as a pipe fitter and technician for the gas company, says, “I didn’t know about phonics. I didn’t know the spelling rules. I could fix anything with my hands, but I couldn’t read well. Now I understand syllables and how words are made. It’s helped my reading, and it’s helped my confidence.”
Now retired, William still carves out time each week for the lessons he says feed his soul and his curiosity. Improving his reading and vocabulary has opened up new horizons and helped him cultivate connections in the community, including his friendship with Irene.

That's a Wrap on the 17th Annual Authors for Literacy Fundraiser!
| |
Thank you for spreading the word and showing up for us this year for the 17th Annual Authors for Literacy Fundraiser! Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, Pisgah Investments Foundation and all of our 2026 Corporate Sponsors for supporting our mission. Your leadership in the community is an inspiration!
Take a closer look at the evening!
“The human story is what keeps us turning the page."
-Margot Lee Shetterly
Because of everyone's support, along with an extraordinary group of individuals who provided a $40,000 matching gift, we raised an incredible $110,000 in donations that evening to support the free, life-changing educational programs we offer within Buncombe County.

💡 Student Spotlight: Real Impact in Action
Karima is in the final stretch of studying for her GED Science test. She and her tutor, Tim, have been working hard, but reviewing complex subjects like physics on a tiny cell phone screen was a major hurdle. With the bigger screen on her laptop, she's able to see much more detail, which gives her a better grasp of "the big picture" ... literally.
With a new laptop from our Chromebook library, Karima has access to the right tools in order to pass her test and change her future! Thank you to The Robert & Toni Bader Charitable Foundation, who funded the purchase of 20 brand-new personal Chromebooks to establish a student library for virtual classes, job applications, and exam prep!
We are deeply grateful to the The Robert & Toni Bader Charitable Foundation, and are thrilled to announce several other funding updates that create more access and opportunity to literacy within Buncombe County:
- Our deepest gratitude to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for their continued, foundational funding of our Adult Literacy and ESOL programs!
- Generous support from Dogwood Health Trust's Leverage Fund will help us strengthen our capacity and pursue future funding opportunities!

Meet Consuelo:
Another Hidden Figure
At this year's Authors for Literacy Fundraiser, we were reminded that hidden figures are all around us. Consuelo immigrated to the United States from Colombia as a single mother with young children and went on to work on the Apollo 17 mission program at NASA, finding her way into a field where doors were just beginning to open for women, and even less so for women of color.
Consuelo's son, Alejandro, carries on her spirit through CFWNC's Consuelo's Fund. Consuelo's Fund is dedicated to improving the well-being and educational development of single parents, a mission that connects deeply with our Adult Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages programs. We are honored to announce that Consuelo's Fund has awarded Literacy Together a grant to support single parents in Buncombe County as they work toward their literacy and education goals! We are so grateful to be part of Consuelo's legacy in this way!
