How is climate change influencing forests across the Northeast, and what can landowners do to prepare?
This new four-part Northern Woodlands series, authored by Dr. Ali Kosiba, explores how climate change is impacting northeastern forests and highlights practical, science-based strategies to help forests withstand stress while continuing to provide important benefits.
Topics include: climate change impacts on northeastern forests, future climate-adapted tree species, managing forests for resilience, and the effects of heavy rain events on upland forests.

Finch Paper Mill Closure Survey and Resources |
The closure of Finch Paper's pulp mill in Glens Falls, NY marks a significant loss for Vermont's forest products industry, affecting loggers, truckers, sawmills, foresters, and landowners across the region. The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) is asking members of the forest products sector to complete a brief survey to help better understand the impacts of the closure on businesses across the region. FPR is also providing information on financing options, business assistance, and other resources that may help affected businesses navigate this transition.

A recent UVM-led study found that natural causes, especially introduced invasive insects, disease, and extreme weather, now the leading cause of tree mortality in Northeastern forests than harvesting.
As insects like the emerald ash borer reshape forests, Vermont foresters are adapting management strategies to promote resilience, support regeneration, and conserve future forests. Read how scientists and landowners are responding to this growing challenge.

Learn the latest about on emerald ash borer, Asian long-horned beetle and spotted lanternfly in these Across the Fence episodes featuring Joanna Garton and Ginger Nickerson from Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program and UVM Forestry Extension.
Although these introduced invasive insects are not yet widespread in Vermont, they are becoming increasingly common elsewhere in the Northeast and pose a threat to our forests and communities. Ginger explains how to identify these pests, the damage they can cause, and the steps everyone can take to help slow their spread.

Leaves, Bark, and Beyond: A Tree Identification Walk |

Join Stowe Land Trust for a free, hands-on tree identification walk led by Protection Foresters Chloe Sardonis and Liam Farley from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation. Learn how to identify common Vermont tree species using leaves, bark, tree form, and ecological clues while exploring the forests along the Stowe Recreation Path. Participants should be prepared for a 2-mile outdoor walk with sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.
