Specialty Schools / Open Enrollment – Given how hectic everything is right now, we're extending the deadline to make your specialty school and open enrollment decisions until Friday, March 27. This extension does NOT apply to the Governor's Schools and CodeRVA; their deadline is still this Friday, March 20, 2020.
The process of notifying students/families who have moved off a waitlist will begin on Monday, March 30. We expect this process to continue on a rolling basis through the end of May, or until all seats are accepted (whichever comes first).
One very important caveat: If the COVID-19 pandemic delays the opening date of our three new schools, we will likely have to reassess the implementation timeline for our rezoning plan and, thus, our open enrollment placements. It is far too early to make any decisions on this, particularly since construction of the new schools remains on track. I will of course provide more information on this as we move further into the spring.
Graduation – I've gotten lots of questions about what's going to happen with graduation. It's still not clear, but it seems likely that many requirements for this year's graduating seniors (and maybe underclassmen, too) will ultimately be waived. There's also the question of whether we'll have graduation ceremonies in June. Again, I'm not sure just yet. As soon as I have clarity on these issues, I'll make sure to let everyone know.
Learning at Home – As a reminder, you don't need to figure this out on your own. We have a TON of resources on our website. Big thanks to the entire academic team for pulling everything together so quickly. Check it out here!
Mr. K's 30 Minutes of Math – I launched my mini-lessons today! Phew! Here's the link to tune in, Monday – Friday, from 2 pm – 2:30 pm. I'm focusing on everyone's favorite topic: fractions! I'm still working on my Zoom skills, and still getting my teaching mojo back, but I'm having a blast and hoping these lessons will be helpful to RPS students. Here's today's episode!
Wishtree Read-Aloud – Today's celebrity guest reader? Cheryl Burke, Vice-Chair of the School Board (and former RPS principal and teacher)!
With great appreciation,
