Academic Advising and Registration 101
It's academic advising and registration season here at Miami. For most of you, this is the first time that you'll be selecting and registering for classes on your own. Your academic advisor can help you through the process. Here are the steps you need to take to choose classes for the spring semester:

Step 1: Schedule a Meeting with Your Academic Advisor
  • Login to MyMiami.
  • Select the 'Student' tab at the top of the page.
  • On the right side of the page, you will see an 'Academic Advisors' section. Note your advisor's contact information.
  • Send your advisor an email asking to schedule a time to meet about spring semester courses. It is important to email well ahead of when you'd like your appointment.
Step 2: Prepare for Your Meeting
  • Look at your Degree Audit. Your Degree Audit is an interactive, real-time document that tells you the requirements you have completed, the requirements that you still need to complete, and how much progress you have made thus far.
    • For more information about your Degree Audit, including how to find your Degree Audit, visit the One Stop website.
  • Consider your goals, what you hope to accomplish in the coming semester, and what questions you have for your advisor.
  • Check out the spring course list. You may even have some ideas of classes you might like to take.
Step 3: Attend your academic advising meeting at the pre-determined day and time.
  • Chat with your advisor about what you've prepared.
  • Consider the advice your advisor gives you and adjust your plan for next semester as needed.
Step 4: Check your registration day and time (available at 9:00 am on October 15).
  • To find out when you will register for classes, you'll want to view your registration time ticket. Login to Bannerweb and click Student Services and Financial Aid.
  • Choose Registration, followed by Your Registration Status and Your Registration Dates & Times.
  • Select Spring Semester 2019 - 2020. Note your registration day and time -- this is when you can login to Bannerweb and make your course selections.
Step 5: Register for Classes at Your Designated Day and Time
  • Note that you will be able to register for up to 17 credit hours during your registration window (College of Engineering and Computing students can register for up to 18 credit hours). You may make additional schedule changes after everyone has registered for classes.
  • If you aren't able to get into a class you really wanted, you should contact the department of that course. Contact information can be found on the Miami University website. If you hope to add a closed class within the Farmer School of Business, please refer to the FSB force add procedures.

Since You Asked
I really want to go to the Student Counseling Service to talk to a counselor but I don’t really know how. Can you help?
It’s great that you want to talk to someone. Mental health is as important to take care of as physical health. To schedule an appointment with the Student Counseling Service, you can call them at 513-529-4634. From there, you’ll schedule an initial consultation where you can talk about what brought you in and the counselor will discuss options to best help you. Your first 3 individual sessions are completely free to you.
My advice is to remain open, because even though therapy might not be what you imagined, it’s important to value a therapist’s professional opinion and not just rely on what you think should happen. Your opinion definitely matters, just be willing to try things you may not have thought about. For an introduction to SCS before you even step foot in the building, check out this video:
What to Expect at Your Student Counseling Service Appointment
I hope this helps, and I hope that you choose to use the Student Counseling Service!
