"The Migrant's Jail: An American History of Mass Incarceration"
This talk will explore how century-long economic, political, and ideological exchange between immigration bureaucracy and the criminal justice system birthed the nation's vast immigration detention system.
Brianna Nofil is Assistant Professor of History at William and Mary University.
Event is co-sponsored by the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies, the Robert E. Strippel Memorial Fund for Dialogue on Justice and Human Rights, and Oxford Citizens for Peace and Justice.

GIC, in partnership with Global Initiatives, invites students, faculty, and staff from across campus to join us in an exploration of International Women's Day. Share experiences of International Women’s Day (March 8) commemorations around the world, learn about its origins in labor and suffrage movements, and find ways to make meaning in global solidarity.
Contributors are welcome to speak in this informal, creative, storytelling space, or simply come and learn.
International snacks will be provided.
Registration for speakers (5 minutes) is encouraged, but not required.

Last Call! One-Week GIC/FSB Trip to Ecuador |

There is still space and a little bit of time to take advantage of our GIC and FSB one-week program "Miami University in Ecuador: Community, Culture, and Development in the Andean Highlands," in Otavalo and Quito, Ecuador (program dates May 18-25).
This one-credit trip will bring students into the Andean highlands, where they will learn about community development, diverse market economies, and cultural preservation. Applications are due March 1.
Scholarships are available!

ITS 201 in Special Collections |

|
Students in Yeliz Cavus's class ITS 201 Intro to International Studies visited the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and Archives, and had an experiential learning day with librarians Katie Gibson, Candace Pine, and Rachel Makarowski. Students worked hands-on with primary and secondary sources from our library collections, and it was a wonderful experience.

ITS major Karma Abboud (ITS, Prof Writing, SPN '28) wrote an op-ed in the latest edition of The Miami Student. Titled "I Can't Wait to Be a Crazy Cat Lady," the article explores gendered expectations for social roles.

In a rescheduled event, Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy will present her latest book at a talk titled "Rewind and Play: the Videotape's Impact on Entertainment," at the Oxford Lane Library. The videotape, once an essential medium, now a nostalgia oddity, was a catalyst for radical societal transformations worldwide. Discover how this technology forever influenced our relationship to entertainment.

Madelyn Detloff gave a presentation on biopolitical smothering as impetus to self-censoring at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in January, as part of the Philosophical Society of Southern Africa Annual Conference.

Naaborle Sackyfio gave a virtual talk for Penn State's Academy for Conflict Resolution on Feb 5th at the invitation of Leah Hollis, Associate Dean for Access, Equity and Inclusion and Professor of Education and Education Policy Studies. Her presentation was titled, "Mindful Leadership in Motion: Embodiment, Conflict, and Values in Higher Education."
