Dear Parents and Families,
My name is Michelle Bowdler and I am the Executive Director of Health and Wellness at Tufts. I so enjoyed speaking at Matriculation Day and having the opportunity to meet so many parents, guardians, and siblings at a variety of events and Open Houses last week. In my role at Tufts, I am responsible for supervising and coordinating support for Health Service and Counseling and Mental Health, as well as Health Promotion and the CARE office, which addresses sexual assault prevention and sexual health more generally. I’m writing today to share information about a couple of exciting new initiatives starting this year at Tufts.

Career Coaching Your Student

As we begin a new semester, students receive advice from professors, advisors, peers, and of course, parents. Research indicates that parents can positively influence the career decisions of their students. To ensure that they get the maximum benefit from your coaching, consider the following questions:
  • Do I objectively guide my student in reflecting on skills, interests, career competencies, and abilities?
  • Do I allow my student the freedom to explore career paths and engage in new experiences without being judgmental?
  • Do I impose ideas (even with the best intentions) that can limit their options?
  • Am I positive and supportive when my student fails? Do I encourage my student to assume responsibility for career decisions?
  • Do I check in periodically to ask, “How can I be helpful?” and listen with openness and understanding?

What's Happening Academically?

Update to Academic Alert

Beginning Fall 2019, parents and/or guardians on undergraduate AS&E students will be notified when their student is sent an Academic Alert at the end of any semester. An Academic Alerts is sent when a student has earned fewer than 12 SHUs but more than 4 SHUs and/or has failed one course of any SHU value. This change was implemented in Summer 2019 by the Arts and Science and Engineering Academic Standing committees and is designed to ensure that students receive coordinated academic support.

Dean's List

Liberal Arts students who have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 SHUs, received letter grades in a minimum of 12 SHUs with no work incomplete, and earned a minimum GPA average of 3.4 are automatically placed on the Dean’s List. Engineering students who have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 SHUs, received letter grades in a minimum of 9 SHUs, completed every course in which they were enrolled with no incomplete work, and earned a minimum GPA average of 3.2 are also automatically placed on the Dean’s List. Their transcripts will note this and they will receive an email notification. Students who wish to have that noted in their local newspapers may request that on SIS.

Letter from Talloires

The summer of 2019 brought over 100 undergraduate and pre-college students to the Tufts European Center in Talloires!
We had so many wonderful students for our Tufts in Talloires, Tufts in Annecy, and Tufts Summit Programs -- it was really a pleasure for us to see them make the most of their time here in the French Alps.
In addition to the immersive experience of living with a French family, all of our students had exciting opportunities to enrich their academic experience through excursions to related sites around the region. For example, our Tufts in Talloires Public Health course went to the World Health Organization and the International Red Cross in Geneva; the Classics course visited the Roman ruins outside of Lyon; the French culture class travelled to a local farm and cheese cooperative; and the Flowers of the Alps course saw fields upon fields of Alpine wildflowers. The Tufts Summit students complemented their studies in International Relations with a private tour of the United Nations in Geneva, and our Tufts in Annecy students enhanced their language and culture immersion with a visit to the great French Resistance site, the Plateau of Glieres. And each week, all of our students were given the opportunity to hike in the mountains and to discover the incredible natural beauty around Talloires.

Our summer also included lots of visits from parents and alums -- which we love! Thank you to all who stopped by the European Center in Talloires. We loved meeting you!
Although we are still finishing our season in Talloires, we are already getting ready for next season. Please be sure to check our website for program dates and details, as well as some lovely photos of Talloires and the European Center. We will post dates and fees in October and start taking registrations for 2020 in the first week of December. It’s never too early to start thinking about the summer! And of course, feel free to like us on Facebook!
