COVID-19 Testing & Group Gathering Recommendations
Student Health & Counseling Services wishes you all a wonderful break. It has been another long year of the pandemic and we hope you enjoy your holiday traditions while continuing to protect yourself and your loved ones during the break.
Here are a few COVID-19 safety tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and testing guidelines to minimize the spread of COVID-19 during gatherings and keep yourself and each other protected.
- Get a COVID-19 vaccine and/or booster if you are eligible.
- Wear a well-fitting mask that covers your face and mouth indoors, even if fully vaccinated.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- If you are sick or have symptoms, don’t host or attend a gathering.
- If you are traveling during the break, follow the CDC Travel Guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
COVID-19 self-tests (also referred to as home tests or over-the-counter tests) are one of many risk-reduction measures. Self-tests can be taken at home or anywhere, are easy to use, and produce rapid results. Self-Testing is recommended at least 1-3 days prior to joining a gathering or large group event, and at least three days after attending an event. Testing can give you information about your risk of spreading COVID-19.
- Get tested immediately if feeling any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever/chills, headache, cough, congestion/runny nose, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, nausea/vomiting, or diarrhea).
- If you are not vaccinated and have been exposed to COVID-19, test immediately. If the test is negative, test again 5-7 days after your exposure date.
- If you are fully vaccinated and have been exposed to COVID-19, test 5-7 days after close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
While waiting for testing results, if you have symptoms or have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19, you should quarantine to avoid spreading COVID-19. If you must be in contact with other people, including your household, always wear a mask and practice physical distancing. Please contact your medical provider with questions or concerns about testing and treatment guidance for COVID-19.

Bill Macriss
(Interim) Associate Vice President/Dean of Students for Student Engagement
Hornets,
Although we have been in the grips of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic for almost two full years, this fall semester has been like no other that has come before. You have shown up each day and gone about your work with professionalism, compassion, and an empathetic spirit, and have done so despite the pressures and stresses the pandemic has placed in each of your own lives.
Despite the pressures this has placed on each and every one of us, it is gratitude I choose to focus on this holiday season. I am grateful for each of you. You are talented, remarkably gifted, and consummate professionals who are experts in your fields and with whom it is a joy to work alongside. Your efforts each day to make our students’ lives better show me the positive impact we have when we lean on “the better angels of our nature”. You inspire me each and every day.
I am hoping you enjoy the holiday season with friends, family, and some relaxing time away. Moreover, it is my hope you may each find time to reflect on the positive impact you have made on our students and on those around you who see your good works. Happy Holidays!

As the end of the year approaches, I continue to feel inspired by the deep desire and commitment from staff and student employees to ensure our students are taken care of and their dream of attaining a college degree remains within reach. Despite the hardships we have all endured, we remain strong, resilient, united, and determined to make the impossible possible for the betterment of our students and campus community. I’m honored to work alongside all of you and look forward to continuing to advance student success together in 2022. I wish you a wonderful and well-deserved holiday break in the company of family, friends, and loved ones. Happy Holidays!

Karyl Burwell
Executive Director of Student Affairs Strategic Business Resources
Wow, it’s hard to believe yet another year has nearly passed. This is a good time to look back and recognize each other for the commitment, dedication, and just plain hard work it took to create an environment where our students could succeed, even in the most trying of times. You all demonstrate that we mean it when we say “Student Affairs; Where Students Come First.”
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday, filled with friends, family, laughter, and joy.

Joy Stewart-James
Senior Associate Vice President for Student Health & Counseling Services
To the SHCS team…. thank you for your incredible response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We never closed to in-person visits; we pivoted to telehealth and telecounseling; we embraced several different waves of COVID-19 testing; we did contact tracing for the entire campus, and we opened and staffed a COVID-19 vaccination clinic. All the while you endured over a year of constant interruption and noise due to the WELL construction. The way you came together as a team moving things forward with positivity and resilience is remarkable. A crisis like this puts an organization’s culture to the test and you all continue to shine. You all focused on what needed to be done and worked as a team. I’m honored to work with you.

Thank you from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships
This past year our relationships and collaboration with our campus partners have proven to be vital to our success and the success of our students! We couldn't do our work without you.
I would like to send a big shout-out to the Financial Aid & Scholarships team for their tireless commitment to our students. You all went above and beyond this past year. Thank you!
As students head home for the holidays it is the perfect time to remind them to complete their financial aid application, and take a moment to complete a scholarship application. Scholarship funds can help them in so many ways; from limiting the need to borrow to making college more affordable, and it all starts with a single application!
Help them start the new year off on the right foot by reminding them to file their application by March 2.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year. See you in 2022!
- Anita Kermes, Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships
