Congratulations to senior journalism and mass communication major Tyriana Evans who was selected to be the 2019 GW Commencement student speaker.
She will deliver her speech about overcoming fear in front of nearly 25,000 GW graduates and their families on the National Mall.

Linda Lashendock joins SMPA as Manager of Media and Instructional Technology after 16 years at Elon University and following a 20-year career at CNN.
Linda has been honored with two Edward R. Murrow Awards, four Emmy Awards and one White House Special Recognition Award.

PLANET FORWARD ANNOUNCES STORYFEST WINNERS
The 2019 Planet Forward Storyfest winners were announced Friday at the Planet Forward Summit.
SMPA's Guy Ginsberg, B.A. '20, won the top prize in the podcast category and will go on a storytelling expedition this summer exploring the Galápagos Islands.

The Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication (IPDGC) is offering a grant of up to $5,000 to a promising student for a project in public diplomacy.

The Betty Endicott Scholarship is available to sophomores, juniors or seniors with a declared major in communication or journalism and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

David Karpf was quoted in The New York Times article “Michael Avenatti’s Biggest Case Yet: His Own.’’
Nina Seavey served on the documentary jury for the Cleveland International Film Festival.
Silvio Waisbord co-edited The Routledge Companion to Media and Scandal. The book features 50 chapters of different aspects of media and scandals, with leading authors from around the world. Waisbord also authored The political benefit of being incorrect in Clarin (Argentina).
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Aaron Huertas, B.A. ‘06, was named communications director for the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. He was previously founder and principal of Science Communication Media and has served in a variety of senior communications positions working on science and energy public policy. While at GW, Huertas was involved with The Hatchet and Roosevelt Institution.
