Debunking Resume Myths

One of our favorite things to do is help your students create strong resumes. After all, the resume is a powerful marketing tool that opens doors to great internships, jobs, grad programs, and more. As you can imagine, we often encounter misconceptions when discussing resumes with students. Here are 3 common ones:
  • My resume should reflect every job and activity … ever. While it’s tempting to keep all that great info from high school, students will need to make cuts to create more room for Tufts experiences and achievements. For undergraduate students, a one-page resume is appropriate. Check out our Tufts Career Guide (PDF) for sample documents.
  • My resume should only describe paid work experiences. Totally false! Resumes can include both paid and unpaid work, volunteering and activities, as well as other notable info such as study abroad, relevant coursework/projects, and computer/lab/language skills.
  • I should use the same version of my resume to apply for all internships/jobs. It’s true that if a student’s search focuses on one type of position, a single version of the resume may be fine (along with a cover letter targeted to the individual employer). However, when students apply to a wider range of positions, they should consider ways to tailor their resumes to better match the given career field/employer/type of job.
