Open Now: Applications for the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program!

Enhance your teaching skills, foster scholarship in education, and develop your leadership potential. Apply for the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program (MTLDP)! All full-time basic science, clinical science, and health sciences SMHS faculty involved in teaching are welcome to apply. 
The 23rd cohort will run from September 4th, 2024 - June 18th, 2025. Classes are every Wednesday from 12:30pm-5:00pm; in-person attendance to all classes is required. 
Applications will be accepted until January 5th, 2024. For more information on MTLDP, including application instructions and testimonials from graduates, visit our website: https://mtldp.smhs.gwu.edu/.

Additional Education Research Resources
CHEERS Education Research Consultation is a way for students, trainees, and faculty to receive interprofessional and interdisciplinary peer consultations for education projects, conference abstracts/presentations, and manuscripts. All sessions are from 12:00 - 1:00 pm, presenters will have a choice between an in-person or virtual format to present their ideas. Please fill out this form if you are interested in a consultation. This consultation can be on a planned submission, an already submitted abstract (waiting for a response), planned grants, or rejected grants!  See the full advertisement here.

SMHS Education Research Team Publishes in Academic Medicine

Kudos to SMHS faculty Kirsten Brown, Anthony Artino, Terry Kind, and GW Med student (Class of 2024) Arianne Prince for their recent Academic Medicine publication entitled, Faculty and Student Perceptions of Unauthorized Collaborations in the Preclinical Curriculum: Student or System Failure? There is a corresponding podcast by the lead author and Terry Kind that awards CME. Be sure to check it out!

CFE SMHS Teaching Essentials Series

The Teaching Essentials Series program is a series of one-hour workshops for scientists, clinicians, researchers, post-docs, and graduate students who want to learn more about key aspects of teaching & learning. Each session has an online component consisting of short videos and brief exercises to do on your own prior to the session. Participants then attend a 1-hour interactive virtual workshop session to apply concepts and get feedback from peers. Sessions are held monthly, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm via Zoom.

CFE SMHS October Faculty Spotlight - Dr. Erin Wentzell

Dr. Erin Wentzell
Join the CFE as we highlight Erin Wentzell PT, DPT, DrPH, In honor of the National Physical Therapy Month. Erin will highlight the “Value of PT” through her efforts at GWSMHS and her recently funded project, "Classroom Without Walls: Investigating learning in students, faculty, and participants during a community engaged mobility screening." Erin discusses her role as a pediatric physical therapist, her involvement within the GW Medical Enterprise community, and the impact she hopes her research will have on community public health and the development of students. Faculty Focused Resources

Apply Now: AAMC's MedEdSCHOLAR Program

The AAMC's MedEdSCHOLAR Program is now accepting applications for its second cohort. This program offers mentorship in medical education scholarship for minoritized early career faculty or for those who are new to medical education research. The goal is to help mentees gain exposure to the scholarly editorial process, build networks with medical education scholars, and increase visibility within the academic medicine community. Eligible individuals are encouraged to apply by November 15, 2023, by submitting a short CV and demographic intake statement. The program's flexible activities allow participants to align their involvement with their interests and availability. For more information, please review the full call. Managing Difficult Discussions Self-paced Module

The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Center for Faculty Excellence designed a new online course that is now available on the CFE Learning Group page: Managing Difficult Discussions. The module is for any faculty person or community volunteer who will be leading meaningful and psychologically safe dialogue with health professional students. This course offers suggestions on how to lead difficult discussions and how to keep them psychologically safe so learning can be maximized for the student participants.

Teddy Hristov, the CFE Senior Instructional Designer, will hold weekly office hours starting in October to support faculty. These office hours are designated for discussing and practicing the best use of educational technology and pedagogical teaching/learning methods.

PollEverywhere Updates and Assistance 
The Office of Medical Education sent out an update about PollEverywhere. The note included the following changes to current accounts: 
PollEverywhere Instructions on how to apply the updates to a current slide deck:
  • A link to video tutorial with the instructions.
  • Text instructions below + see #8 below:
1.     Open Powerpoint Slides > Login with your username and password (on PollEv tab in PowerPoint)
2.     Select > Check for updates (Latest version is 3.0.9)
*If you are having issues with Steps 1 or 2, please go to the following link below to download the PowerPoint plug-in directly and install.
3.     Select > Sync (to re-sync all your PollEv slides)
4.     Use PPT presentation mode to check slides
5.     Select > Insert > Activity (to re-insert any slides having issues)
6.     If syncing and reinserting slides does not work, test your poll by going to Polleverywhere.com > Login > Select Poll > Click "Present"
7.     If you are still having continuing issues, please contact smhsav@gwu.edu. OME staff administrator is assigned to assist with session materials but please allow for a three-day lead time.
