UT Launches Institute of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, formally announces the launch of the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. The institute represents UT’s increasingly interdisciplinary approach to tackling real-world problems for the benefit of Tennesseans and beyond. Through the colocation of academic, industry, and government teams, the institute aims to advance understanding of materials and facilitate the translation of new knowledge into solutions, products, and services that benefit global society.

Five UT students have been selected to be a part of the 2022 National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program, which supports outstanding graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields who are pursuing research-based graduate degrees.

UT has opened its first out-of-state research office: the UT Space Institute Huntsville Research Center. This research center will focus on connecting federal agencies and industry leaders with UT talent and capabilities to solve complex aerospace and defense challenges.

Two UT juniors—Alexander Greenhalgh and Hannah Lee—have been named 2022 Goldwater Scholars. These scholarships are awarded to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Professor Annette Engel is part of team studying subterranean biodiversity associated with lava tubes. Engel has been named as a principal investigator on a four-year $1.29 million collaborative research grant from NSF.
