Earthquake Preparedness: Get Informed, Plan Ahead, Stay Safe

Once August arrives it feels like we're at a kind of half way point-- still emerging from all that we learned and experienced over the past academic year, and yet already looking forward to the start of the new one.
We closed last year on a high note. During our Student Affairs End-of-Year Event, we heard from outstanding PSU alumni, Jeremy Emerson. Jeremy inspired us all as he shared the many ways that his experiences inside and outside of the classroom helped him to launch his successful career and ignite his continued commitment to give back to Portland as an entrepreneur and an advocate.
Daryl Pierson, Director of Planning and Sustainability, also joined us and provided an overview of PSU's Place Matters Design Competition, which invited designers from around the world to submit project ideas that would activate outdoor and street-level spaces and increase a sense of belonging for PSU's students, faculty and staff. It is also hoped that the projects will add to the vibrancy of downtown Portland. We've just have recently learned that the winner of the competition is "Constellation of Connections," submitted by Portland-based design firm Walker Macy Collaborative.
In addition to the Walker Macy installment, there are lots of other exciting campus projects underway. We will soon be opening the Vernier Science Center, which is in its final stages of completion, and breaking ground on the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design building. And the City of Portland recently announced a resolution that asks Portland State to work with the city to craft a win-win solution for the development of both the current site of the Keller Auditorium and the site that Portland State proposed for a new state-of-the-art performance venue on our campus. We look forward to these and other projects taking shape in the coming weeks and months and are grateful to our partners who are working hard to help PSU's physical campus to be an optimally beautiful, enriching space for learning and community.
I hope you are finding time to rest and restore this summer and I look forward to seeing all of you soon,
Michele
