UTIA Receives $1 Million Award to Study Animal Welfare Indicators in Poultry Production
A research team from UTIA has been awarded $1 million to create and implement a computer vision system to monitor poultry production. The grant was funded by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, a competitive grants program of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Tara Moore, UT's Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education
Mahshid Ahmadi, assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been selected for recognition as a Sloan Research Fellow for her work in chemistry. She is just the fifth faculty member from UT to be so honored since the fellowship’s beginning in 1955.

In December 2021, a volcanic eruption in the South Pacific resulted in a large oil spill in Peru. Due to his experience with similar environmental crises, UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair for Environmental Biotechnology Terry Hazen was approached for assistance in clean-up efforts.

Nicole McFarlane, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has been named the first recipient of the Science Alliance’s Program for Advancing Collaborative Teams (PACT). Her research proposes to investigate hybrid biomicroelectronic systems.

Established in 1995, the Vine School Health Center was opened to provide access care in an area where there is none. The center, now celebrating 25 years of care, is a community partnership between the College of Nursing and Knox County Schools.

Marilyn Reish, a graduate student in UT's School of Landscape Architecture, is combinging her passion for the environment and knowledge of farming to build a solar-powered static-aerated composting system for the city of Knoxville.
