Updates from Judy K. Orr, Executive Director
|
Dear friends,
By now, you have likely seen the announcement that we must downsize our New Americans program. Since 1962, this cornerstone program of Catholic Charities has supported refugees legally admitted to the U.S., helping those fleeing war, persecution, and danger. Grounded in Scripture and Catholic social teaching, this work has been a vital expression of our mission. We deeply regret that changes in federal funding and priorities now prevent us from continuing this program.
The federal government’s decision to pause refugee arrivals means we will not receive new clients. That fact, coupled with the withdrawal of our national partner, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, means there is no structure in place for us to sustain the program. That reality will necessitate the layoff of 51 staff members by mid-September. The restructuring weighs heavily on us, as our staff is mightily committed to this work, and each one of them is an outstanding example of living out Christ’s message of love.
Nevertheless, the mission to help those in need remains at the heart of our work, even as we face difficult changes. We will continue to serve those who have been legally permitted to enter the U.S. through our sister operation, the Tennessee Office for Refugees, which coordinates resettlement efforts across the state.
Our other programs remain, and we will continue to serve our neighbors in need at all of our current eight locations. Our Family Resource Centers are thriving, but that unfortunately means the demand is growing for emergency assistance, emotional support, and employment services. I am sure you all know people who are facing layoffs and unexpected expenses.
Thank you for standing with us—and them—during this difficult time. The late Pope Francis wrote in his autobiography, “Hope is the virtue of a heart that doesn’t close itself in the dark, doesn’t stop at the past, doesn’t scrape along in the present, but can clearly see tomorrow.”
With your continued partnership in our mission, you make it possible for us to keep offering love, hope, and healing—fulfilling our commitment to the community as we always have. Here’s how to help.

Join us for Kaleidoscope on Saturday, June 14!
|
|
|
I invite you to join us at Kaleidoscope—a free, fun, and family-friendly celebration of our region’s rich cultural diversity.
Presented by Catholic Charities and co-sponsored by the YMCA and Habitat for Humanity (two Christian-based nonprofits), this vibrant event brings together music, food, art, and traditions from around the world for a joyful day of connection and community.
Kaleidoscope began as part of the Team Up Project, a national initiative launched by Interfaith America to build bridges across differences and bring people together at the grassroots level.
The event honors our culturally diverse Catholic communities alongside like-minded faith groups and supportive organizations.
Now more than ever, we are united in caring for our families and neighbors—core values shared across all faith traditions. This spiritual foundation is what makes Kaleidoscope truly unique.
Enjoy global performances, international cuisine, and hands-on activities for all ages. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.

Hope Is the Greatest Gift — Help Us Extend It
|
While we offer critical services like food, housing support, counseling, and job training, it is hope that we give most — and it’s hope that keeps our neighbors moving forward, even in the hardest times.
Right now, that hope is under pressure. More Middle Tennesseans are facing hunger, housing instability, and mental health challenges than ever before.
As we approach the end of our fiscal year on June 30, your support can help us meet this moment.
Please consider making a gift today. Your generosity will bring tangible help and spiritual healing to those who need it most.
|
Thanks for being a beacon of love, hope, and healing. Let’s continue to walk together in service to our neighbors.
May the peace of Christ be with you,
|
