IP Year in Review 2016 - An Honourary IP Osgoode Year!

February 2, 2017 by Giuseppina D'Agostino
As we get busy in 2017, it is always useful to reflect back to 2016 to see developments in the IP world that will set the stage for many ongoing changes that are already taking place in 2017. As usual, I have also included some IP Osgoode highlights (see the end of what I tried to make as brief a piece as possible!).

IP Intensive: In the Broadcasting Business - A Semester Interning at the CBC
January 19, 2017 by Sebastian Beck-Watt
While I never did manage to “accidentally” bump into Peter Mansbridge in the halls or make it onto TV, I would say I still had a great experience as an intern in the CBC’s Law Department. My time with our national broadcaster as part of Osgoode’s Intellectual Property Law & Technology Intensive Program was not only invaluable legal experience, it was also thoroughly enjoyable. As an intern, I had the opportunity to see and work on the wide range of legal issues dealt with by in-house counsel. Working with both the business and media law departments, I was involved in dealing with intellectual property, contracts, regulations, contests, advertising, social media, and advertising, to name a few.

IP Intensive: AstraZeneca visits the Supreme Court of Canada
January 19, 2017 by Stephen J. Dalby
As part of Osgoode’s Intellectual Property Law & Technology Intensive Program, I had the distinct pleasure of working with the Legal Affairs team at AstraZeneca Canada. With a technical background in the life sciences and a keen interest in pursuing a legal career engaged in this field, having the opportunity to gain first hand experience in the operational side of the pharmaceutical industry was very exciting and, ultimately, very rewarding. In fact, I will remember it as among the most enriching learning experiences of my time at Osgoode Hall Law School.

IP Intensive: An Entrepreneurial Perspective of Intellectual Property Law - A Semester at ventureLAB
January 19, 2017 by Justin Philpott
My internship at ventureLAB as part of Osgoode’s IP Intensive program, broadened my perspective on intellectual property law in a way that I did not expect. It was a richly rewarding learning experience that I could not have acquired through academic courses. ventureLAB is a non-for-profit business accelerator, specifically geared to entrepreneurs in the technology and health sectors. Entrepreneurs seeking to grow their business engage with ventureLAB for its business development programs and network of specialized business advisors and mentors.

IP Intensive: Learn Swimming by Simply Jumping into the Pool - A Semester at Janssen Inc.
January 19, 2017 by Sue (Zhonghui) Fei
You can learn all the case law and statute law to your heart’s desire in school, but it is difficult to learn the detailed workings of an industry in a classroom despite the creative planning of any brilliant professor or lecturer. Although throwing a child into the pool is a controversial method of teaching one how to swim, it may be the most effective method in teaching a student about any interested industry. Through Osgoode’s Intellectual Property Law and Technology Intensive Program, I had the great opportunity of being thrown into the pool of the pharmaceutical industry. I spent ten weeks with the Law Department at Janssen Inc. in Toronto and had a front row seat to the latest developments in the pharmaceutical industry.

IP Intensive: Stanford CodeX – Sunshine, Start-ups and Silicon Valley
January 19, 2017 by Paul Blizzard
Silicon Valley is the nexus of the entrepreneurship in the 21st century. While European tourists may duck into a medieval church to sightsee, a Bay Area tourist may take in any number of technological cathedrals. In the Bay, it is easy to trace the history of technology companies like Google, Tesla, Hewlett Packard and Apple from humble beginnings in garages and university labs to flashy corporate campuses. A significant number of these companies have their roots at Stanford University, and it is a focal point for innovation in the Bay Area. It was my distinct honour to have my placement with Osgoode’s Intellectual Property Intensive Program at CodeX, the Stanford Centre for Legal Informatics.

IP Intensive: A Semester at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office
January 19, 2017 by Gurk Singh
I came to law school with a pretty definitive idea that I want to explore a career within Intellectual Property, but I was not quite sure what career might be ideal for me. While I was fortunate enough to get some exposure into what a career in IP looks at a private firm; I had no idea what a career elsewhere might entail. Enter an opportunity to try six different career paths in ten weeks.

IP Intensive: Inside the Sausage Factory at Canadian Heritage
January 19, 2017 by Jacquilynne Schlesier
“Laws are like sausages. It’s better not to see them being made.” Or so Otto Von Bismarck is (incorrectly) said to have said. That may well be true for the general public, but for law students, understanding how laws are made can add a lot to what we know about how they are applied. For a self-proclaimed copyright nerd like me, there is no better place to see that process than in the Copyright and International Trade Policy Branch of Canadian Heritage.
