The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair attracted 218 students and 26 companies last Thursday at Stauffer-Flint Hall. Here’s a breakdown of journalism concentrations represented:
Digital Marketing Communications, Advertising and Public Relations: 103
Sports Media and Society: 32
Multimedia Journalism: 27
Media Arts and Production: 15
Seniors had the largest turnout with 72 members of the Class of 2025, followed by sophomores (66), juniors (59) and freshmen (21).

Jayhawk Finances is hosting another financial wellness workshop. Saving and Investing 101 will be on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Pine Room of the Kansas Union. Current students, and especially those who are preparing to graduate, can learn basic principles of saving, investment accounts, and retirement.
Did you know that Counseling and Psychological Services offers workshops and groups to all currently enrolled KU students? CAPS workshops meet once a week for one hour, and students can join any time. Workshops are free, and this semester the topics are as follows: Thriving with Anxiety, Building the Nest: A Resiliency Based Workshop, Focus for Success, and Building your Flock: a Healthy Relationships Skills Group. Mandy Matney, a 2012 JMC School graduate, spoke to our JMC 101 class last week! Mandy has produced two shows that topped podcast charts -- Murdaugh Murders Podcast and Cup of Justice -- and is a best-selling author.

Day family matching donations for award: The family of former JMC faculty member Larry Day launched the J. Laurence Day Study Abroad Award earlier this year. In celebration of Larry’s 90th birthday, the family will match up to $2,500 in donations. The award aims to offer JMC School students with opportunities to learn and grow through study abroad. Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aime and Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman experimentally examined a variety of roles that AI might play in the news generation process, as signaled through bylines that indicate the varying levels of AI involvement and contribution relative to the staff writer. When readers thought AI contributed more to a news article, they indicated lower message credibility and source credibility perceptions. Read the study, “News bylines and perceived AI authorship: Effects on source and message credibility. Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans.”
Associate Professor Hong Vu, along with his co-authors, including Doctoral Student Yiwen Wu from the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Doctoral Student Hannah Ha, and Doctoral Student Giang Nguyen from Deakin University, presented a poster at the ComNet24 Conference for nonprofit communication in Kansas City on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 18.

JMC Ph.D. Open House: The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas will be holding a virtual open house for our Ph.D. program in Journalism and Mass Communications on Oct. 25 (2-3 p.m. U.S. Central Time). Students invited to networking event: The KU Alumni Association and University Career Center will host a Mocktails & Mingle program titled Classroom to C-Suite at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Jayhawk Welcome Center. The casual networking event helps students connect with alumni for networking and career exploration. Learn more.
The Dole Institute of Politics will present its latest installment in its discussion group series titled “Beyond the Ballot: Understanding the 2024 Elections,” Wednesday at 4 p.m. This discussion will focus on “The Battle for Congress” and will feature the Kansas City Star lead political reporter Jonathan Shorman, Wall Street Journal reporter Natalie Andrews, and political science professor Nathaniel Birkhead. The event is free and located at the Dole Institute (2350 Petefish Dr.).
JMC School students invited to lecture by New York Times Columnist: The 2024 Sutton Lecture will take place in the KU School of business on Oct. 24 featuring Kevin Roose, a New York Times columnist and author. He will speak on business, ethics and AI and how they interact with one another in today’s society. Registration is required, and you can register here.

Longtime Detroit anchor and JMC alumnus Devin Scillian is leaving Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV in December. Scillian started anchoring at WDIV in 1996 after joining the station as a reporter in 1995, according to a release.
