Orientation Canvas Course Now Available

The time has come! If you've registered for orientation, you will receive access to the orientation Canvas course this afternoon. The orientation Canvas course is a comprehensive introduction to the Miami experience - academic and student life communities, opportunities, and resources and people who are ready to support you. Here's what you need to know to get started:
  • The course has lots of content in it. To stay on track, we suggest the following timeline:
    • May 3 - May 14: complete modules 1- 4
    • May 15 - May 21: complete modules 5 - 7
    • May 22 - June 1: complete modules 8 - 10
    • June 1 - July 15: complete modules 11 - 14
  • Begin working through the orientation Canvas modules; as you complete a module, you will unlock the next one.
  • Once you complete the module about your academic curriculum (Module 10) and attend your real-time orientation session, you'll receive an email invitation (within one business day) to schedule your academic advising appointment.
  • Academic advising appointments begin on June 1 and must be completed by July 1. To stay on track, you should have your advising appointment scheduled by mid-June, meaning you have completed modules 1-10 of the orientation Canvas course and have attended a real-time orientation session by that time.
  • Continue to work through the remaining Canvas modules (11 -14) and plan to finish by July 30 at the latest.
  • Revisit any part of the Canvas course as needed.

To access the orientation Canvas course:

  • Navigate to MyMiami. Login using your Miami Unique ID and password.
  • Under Quick Tools, navigate to your Miami University email account. In your inbox, you will have an invitation for the First-Year Orientation - Summer 2021 orientation Canvas course. You will need to accept the course invitation to move forward.
  • You can always return to MyMiami to access Canvas.
  • It is important that you check your Miami University email account regularly moving forward; official orientation communication will be sent to your Miami email.
Family members who are registered for the orientation program will also receive access to the orientation Canvas course and will receive additional information about account setup from Mark Pontious, Director of Parent and Family Programs.
If you haven't yet registered for orientation, you won't be able to access the orientation Canvas course. Learn more about the orientation process by visiting MiamiOH.edu/orientation.

Miami Bound Pre-Semester Programs

Miami Bound programs present an amazing opportunity for you to engage in learning, leading, and connecting to Miami and meeting other new students. Miami Bound programs take place throughout the summer and before fall semester begins.
By attending a Miami Bound program, you will: find community and connection at Miami, learn more about campus services and resources, and get a head start on getting involved.
Miami Bound capacity varies by program; you should register for the program that you are interested in as soon as you can. To register for a Miami Bound program, you must first be registered for orientation. Then, visit MiamiOH.edu/MiamiBound. You may only register for one program.
If you are going to be a member of the Miami University Marching Band (MUMB) or the Miami NROTC program, you will not need to register for a Miami Bound program.  The MUMB pre-season week in August and the NROTC New Student Orientation program will count as Miami Bound experiences.

Review the New Student Guidebook
The New Student Guidebook is a reference guide that will introduce you to the Global Miami Plan (GMP) and help you navigate advising and registration before, during, and even after the orientation process. It not only explains the GMP, but lists each course that satisfies GMP requirements.

You should review the Guidebook online before your academic advising appointment (scheduled through the orientation process) in order to be most prepared to register for fall classes at orientation.  As you review the New Student Guidebook, write down any questions you have, and be ready to discuss your questions during your scheduled advising appointment.  Many of your questions will be answered while progressing through the remote orientation modules (available May 13). We recommend that you focus on the following sections as you prepare for your academic advising appointment:
  • Understanding the Miami curriculum: p. 16
  • Determining credit earned and course placement: p. 28
  • List of courses that meet each Global Miami Plan requirement: p. 59 (with corresponding course descriptions beginning on p. 78)
  • Suggested first-year courses for each major: p. 114
