Welcome to the last Asian Studies Newsletter of the 2023-24 academic year. We hope you've enjoyed seeing it appear in your inbox each month.

We dedicate this issue to our graduating seniors. I would like to give special mention to our program's student awardees: Jonathan Eaton, Award for Excellence in Area Studies, Chinese, and Emma Nelson, Award for Excellence in Area Studies, Pan-Asia. Great work, Jon and Emma!

The program is also delighted to announce the addition of Aleksandr Sklyar to our team as Senior Lecturer in University Studies, where he will be energizing our curriculum in the years to come.

Finally, I am honored to hand over the reins of directorship to Professor Yang Song from Economics. 2024-2025 promises to be a big year for the program. Thanks to Yang for stepping up to lead Asian Studies into an exciting future!

Recent Happenings

Asian Studies Honors Thesis

On May 9, Jonathan Eaton '24 defended his Asian Studies honors thesis, a translation and analysis of the 1978 Chinese science-fiction comic book Death Ray on Coral Island. After a lively presentation and discussion, Jon was granted high honors by the committee of Asian Studies faculty, John Crespi (EALL), Carolyn Hsu (SOAN), and Jing Wang (EALL). Congratulations, Jon!

Asian Studies Banquet

The Asian Studies Program hosted its annual banquet on April 17th at the Seven Oaks Golf Club. Several students presented their recent projects related to East Asia, including a presentation by senior Jonathan Eaton on his thesis. After the engaging presentations, participants enjoyed a dinner provided by the Seven Oaks Golf Club. Professor Crespi also revealed the department's new T-shirt and distributed Asian Studies cords to the graduating seniors.

Hafsa Kanjwal: Colonizing Kashmir

On Wednesday, April 17th, at Persson Auditorium, Hafsa Kanjwal, Assistant Professor of South Asian History at Lafayette College, gave an engaging presentation about her recent book,

Colonizing Kashmir. She illuminated the strategies used by the Indian and Kashmiri governments to utilize state-building as a means to establish India's colonial occupation of Kashmir following the Partition. The presentation was followed by a spirited question-and-answer session with Colgate students.

2024 Marleigh Grayer Ryan Student Writing Competition of New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS)

NYCAS encourages the development of scholarly writing skills by awarding annual prizes for excellent student papers dealing with Asia.
