Join us for drop in advising and a slice of pie today, March 18, 12:30 - 2 pm in the PCS: MAK A-2-610.

Drop in with any questions you have about registration, classes, graduation, etc. and enjoy a piece of really good pie too!

Dr. Trachette Jackson from the University of Michigan will visit us on Monday March 23 for two events:

Meet & Greet in the PCS (MAK A-2-610) on Monday March 23, 5 - 6 pm. Join us for informal discussion and snacks!
Mosaic Lecture: Mobilizing Mathematics for the Fight Against Cancer. Monday March 23, 7 pm, in Loutit 103 (a large lecture hall in Henry Hall). Dr. Jackson will speak about how mathematical oncologists apply mathematical and computational modeling approaches to every aspect of cancer biology, including the use of targeted drug treatment strategies in combination with immunotherapy.

Math & Stats Club Presentation Night: Wednesday April 1, 6 pm, in the PCS.
There's an event every Friday at 1 in the PCS! The math department hosts events throughout the semester on Fridays at 1pm in the PCS (MAK A-2-610). Keep this time available so you can attend. Everyone is welcome!

2026 Math Department T-Shirt For Sale! The winning t-shirt design has math buttons on the back.

Shirts are available for purchase for $20.06 (this includes tax and a licensing fee).

Get your order before end of the day on Monday, March 30. They will be mailed to the GVSU math department and available for pick up in the math office in mid-late April.

Steelcase job: Sam Hoffman (a GV applied math alum from 2024) contacted us with this job opportunity: I'm reaching out to inform you and any ambitious math students at GV that there is a Product Data Analyst Role Opening at Steelcase. This is a full-time/contract through Experis, not an internship so this is for students planning to graduate this semester. Sam works as a product analyst at Steelcase. Questions? Career & Internship Info: If you're looking for a summer internship or a post-graduation job, now is the time to do it! Here are some resources to help:
- Resources to find an internship: Handshake, the Career Center, LinkedIn and Indeed, plus the Career & Internship fair.
- The GVSU Career Center can help you find career and internship opportunities via their many events, including Career Communities and CareerLab.
- Capstone credit for your internship (MTH 490): Applied math majors who are planning to do an internship might be able to earn capstone credit! If your internship is "mathy" and meets some other requirements, you can get capstone class credit (MTH 490) for that internship. Click the link for more information. The process to get approved for MTH 490 takes time -- if you intend to apply for a MTH 490 internship capstone, email or talk to Dr. Short right away to get the process started. Don't wait!
- Unpaid Internship Support. If you find an internship and register for MTH 490 but aren't paid for it, you can apply for up to $1500. There are many details; click the link for more.
- Community-Based Work Study: If you are eligible for work study, this is a chance to earn money and make a difference in your community.
- Employer of the Day: Informal opportunities to connect with potential employers.

soon! Volunteer at Science Olympiad: Saturday March 21, on the Valley Campus. Science Olympiad is an event that inspires middle- and high-school students to learn about science as they compete. There are volunteer slots open all day! This also counts towards volunteer hours for education majors.
Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education is a 6-week summer program in Budapest, Hungary, where mathematics educators study problem-solving, creativity, and mathematical communication. Designed for pre-service teachers! Applications are due April 1.

Math Student Research and Travel Funding: Deadline extended: Due March 31!

Up to $200 per student is available. Awards can be given for three broad categories: (1) research dissemination, (2) research costs, (3) grad school related expenses (like application costs, or cost of a visit). We may be able to award more than $200 because of additional funds.

University of Wisconsin-Madison has a brand new Masters in Applied & Computational Math. They're still accepting applications on a rolling basis.
soon! Kindschi Fellowship: Applications for Summer 2026 are due this Friday March 20. Provides financial support to students pursuing rigorous, independent scholarship during the academic year, mentored by a faculty member, up to $5000 plus travel and supplies funding. Talk with a mentor soon!
Conferences! Conferences are a great place to present your work, meet other math students, and get plugged in to the mathematical community. Here are a bunch of conferences that are coming up soon:
- Michigan MAA Conference: March 27-28 at SVSU. This is the Michigan meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, one of the largest professional groups for mathematicians. See the website for registration details.
- The 4th International Mathematics and Statistics Student Research Symposium: Saturday, April 11, 2026 online. IMSSRS is free and welcomes students to present research, explore current research topics, and connect with peers worldwide. The abstract submission deadline is March 27, 2026. Visit our website or see our conference flyer for more info.

Put these dates on your calendar!

March 27 at 5 pm: Last day to withdraw from a class with a "W" grade.
April 24: Last day of classes
April 25 - May 2: Exam week

One important thing to know: Registration is coming!

Registration for next year's classes is opening soon! You should register as soon as you can. Here's a bunch more information about how to register.

Here's a quick reference - this refers to the total number of credits you've earned, including transfer credits and the classes you're in right now:

Senior (85+ credits):
120+ credits: March 24
105-119 credits: March 25
93-104 credits: March 26
85-92 credits: March 27

Junior (55 - 84 credits):
74-84 credits: March 30
62-73 credits: March 31
55-61 credits: April 1

Sophomore (25-54 credits):
41-54 credits: April 2
30-40 credits: April 3
25-29 credits: April 6

Freshman (0-24 credits): April 7

Open Registration: April 8 and beyond. Everyone can add or drop classes during this time.
