Hello, Fellow Dog Lovers!
It's been quite a month, hasn't it? With all of the turmoil going on around the world, sometimes it's even more important than usual to take time to enjoy our dogs (and other animals in our lives). I know that I find it a great relief to get out and just be with my dogs on walks or around the house, especially when there's so much craziness and uncertainty in the world around us. Wouldn't it be nice sometimes to just be a dog and not have to take part in some of the political and meteorological horror shows on our doorstep?
We hope that all of you affected by the horrific storms and ensuing aftermath are doing ok and finding comfort in your loved ones - including the four-legged variety. Even though it seems like we've had more than our usual share already, it's still only the beginning of the hurricane season. And even for those of you not in hurricane country, it's always a good idea to brush up on your disaster preparedness plans when it comes to your pets.

TEACHING IMPULSE CONTROL: A VALUABLE LESSON FOR REAL LIFE DOG TRAINING
Sometimes we think of training as something that only happens when it's time for training. Many dog owners get into the habit of putting their training techniques and methods into a 'training bubble' that doesn't translate to the outside world.
Positively Contributor and VSPDT Donna Elliott shares an experience that helped remind her about the importance of applying training in the real world.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR PETS FOR NATURAL DISASTERS
Following the unprecedented destruction caused by hurricanes like Harvey, Irma and Maria, it's more important than ever to take a few minutes and prepare yourself, your family and your dogs for what to do if and when disaster strikes.

Another common problem this time of year is thunderstorms. This is an issue that is manageable, but takes some planning, patience and forward-thinking. Read more about how to help your dog cope during big storms by clicking the link below.

TRAINING A DEAF DOG
The idea of owning a deaf dog is very frightening to some. The idea of training such a dog can be even more terrifying to a new owner. The fact that a dog can't hear isn't a big deal to the dog - they've always been unable to hear so it's just life for them, it's normal. You are likely to make it into a bigger deal than you should, and they can quickly pick up on your uneasiness.
When training your deaf dog, don't ever have the mentality that because she is deaf that she can't do something. A deaf dog is capable of doing anything that a hearing dog can - except for hearing!

DONNA ELLIOTT
Mutts With Manners
Donna Elliott has been hooked on training since acquiring two sibling Border collie puppies in 1999. Training quickly became a new way of life with two very active herding dogs (and no sheep!) in the backyard.

Donna’s business “Mutts With Manners” was formed from a desire to help the average dog owner have a well behaved life long companion. Her hope is that with the right training dogs will stay in their first home and not be given up or euthanized for behavior problems.
