Dear Student,
I am writing about a disturbing spate of offensive graffiti on our campuses found recently by members of our community. Derogatory and crude graffiti was found at the SMFA in the last few weeks, as was a hate symbol on our Medford campus, and similar vulgar images were found on whiteboards in Cummings Center and the School of Engineering. Some of these images were found in areas open to the public, and others in areas of limited access.
Defacing public areas creates an unwelcoming environment and disrespects every member of our community. Individually, these incidents go against the values and expectations of behavior of our community. They also may require extensive resources to repair the ensuing damage. Collectively, they point to the work we must do together to establish a campus culture that is respectful and accepting to all. It is up to all of us to take care of our shared spaces.
All incidents have been reported to TUPD and are under investigation. Once those are complete, they will be referred to the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO). The Office of Community Standards will address all violations with those responsible. I ask that you please respect the investigative processes.
As always, I encourage you to reach out to me directly or my colleagues in the offices listed below if you witness or experience behavior that is contrary to our values and community standards. We will treat your information with confidentiality and strive to resolve the situation in partnership with you.
I understand also that hearing about these incidents may be distressing, and I want to underscore the resources available to everyone in the community. DOSA, OEO, and DSDI are all here to support you. And as always, Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS) has open counseling appointments every day, and the Counselor-on-Call is available evening and weekends. You can also contact the CARE office or receive advice from Ears for Peers, a student-led support group. We are always here to support you, and genuinely welcome you to reach out.
Toward a culture of dignity and respect,
