Impact Leader Fellows Program
The Impact Leader program is a professional development program for CALS graduate students. It is an honor to be selected for this program as an Impact Leader Fellow. As a cohort, Fellows will gain knowledge in developing effective teams, communicating with diverse individuals and navigating their careers. Additionally, Fellows will be matched with industry coaches who can give them industry perspectives, help to build a professional network, and highlight the skillsets required to be successful.
The inaugural training was held in Spring 2020 with 16 Fellows across the CALS affiliated graduate programs. Despite the impact of COVID, the Fellows found great benefit in the training as evident from their testimonials https://cals.arizona.edu/news/program-hones-cals-grad-students’-vital-leadership-skills-workplace. I am pleased to announce that the Spring 2021 cohort will be expanded to 24 Fellows (flyer below). The nomination process is coordinated by the Graduate Programs so please speak to your director or coordinator if you are interested.

Assistance in Navigating Career Choices
During the Fall 2019 semester, I met with individuals from all CALS affiliated graduate programs to listen to the concerns of graduate students. At the end of the semester, I created a list of topics that were discussed and distributed via the graduate student listserv. Each Master the Month messenger will include an update from one of these topics.
A number of students across different programs expressed interest in more support navigating career options such as internships, non-academic careers and negotiation skills. Career navigation is a high priority for me this semester and I am proud to have a supportive collaboration with the CALS Career Center. Last month, the Career Center was the Spotlight feature of Master the Month (archived messengers can be found here). In addition, a short survey has been created to gain more specific feedback on the needs of graduate students. The survey is anonymous and no identifiable information will be collected at all. Please complete this survey by 10/12/20 at 8am.

Happening This Month
“Let’s Talk Mentoring” lunch series: We are inviting everyone (faculty, staff, and students) interested in the mentor/mentee relationship to join us for a monthly brown bag lunch series. We are interested in an open dialogue covering wide-ranging viewpoints on the mentoring process in order to cultivate a culture of mentorship in CALS.
NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education Resilience Series and Fall Programing: Offering a series of webinars and small group discussions focused on helping undergraduate students, postbacs, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the sciences develop the resilience needed to thrive in high-knowledge environments. Trainees can register for the webinars using the links below or they can visit our website (https://www.training.nih.gov) and check under “upcoming events”. Trainees who participate in the webinar or who watch the webinar online at another time, are welcome to participate in the small group discussions. Groups will be held each Monday and Tuesday one week following the webinar. Trainees who complete five of the small groups and who participate in, or watch, all of the webinars will receive a certificate upon completion of the series. Grants4Ag funding: Bayer’s vision of Health for All, Hunger for None drives our need to strengthen innovation capabilities in all areas of agriculture. We know we can’t accomplish this alone, so we have evolved our Grants4Ag program to provide financial support for novel, early stage scientific innovations that can contribute to feeding the world without starving the planet. Grants4Ag is a globally accessible grant program, with awards ranging from €5,000 - €15,000 to support research on promising novel concepts. In addition, Bayer offers to bring in expertise, tools and technologies to help develop their ideas. The site is now live for applications and deadline for submissions will be October 30th 2020. Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship for 2021-22: opportunity for funding to support domestic doctoral graduate students. The UA Graduate College offers a one-time award of one (1) cash fellowship, student health insurance and full base in-state tuition to help an outstanding graduate student during their doctoral-track career for the 2021-22 academic year. Virtual Seminar Series: Mental Health and Well-Being of Biomedical Researchers: NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education is offering a virtual seminar series focused on the mental health and well-being on biomedical researchers. The webinar and small group discussions are open to students, fellows, staff and faculty at NIH, universities and research institutions. The topic of our first program is suicide awareness and prevention. Because the small groups will be facilitated by mental health experts, you must register in advance to participate. Dissertation Writing Workshops (.pdf): All sessions are free and will be held via Zoom on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The Zoom meeting link is the same for all sessions in the series, and it is provided after you complete the registration form. You are welcome to sign up for any number of the workshops
The Society for Advancement of Biology Education Research (SABER) is hosting a series of virtual lectures on the topic of racial justice. This will be tailored for a biologist audience. The title is "A call to action: Striving for racial justice in academic biology." They have invited speakers who are primarily people of color to discuss issues of race, equity, diversity, and inclusion to lead discussions or seminars virtually on Zoom. Fall 2020 “Preparing for Faculty Job Applications Series” (PDF) will begin September 1, 2020. This 6-week, fully online, participatory workshop series addresses career pathways within academia and higher education, strategies for creating materials for faculty positions, and preparing for the academic interview and job talk. The series will conclude with an application materials review session in which attendees receive feedback on materials drafted throughout the series. The series is free to attend and will take place on Zoom. A list of the workshop topics and dates is provided below and in this PDF.
