It is my pleasure to write to you for the first time as head of the Department of Anesthesiology at WashU Medicine.

I joined WashU with a deep appreciation for what has long distinguished this department: science that has advanced our field, generations of physicians and scientists trained here, and excellence in patient care. That is the legacy of former chairs Alex Evers, MD, who built one of the nation’s premier anesthesiology departments, and Michael Avidan, MBBCh, who expanded its reach, strength, and impact.
What is equally powerful is the community that surrounds it.

Donor impact: a safer way to treat pain
|
What happens when donors back an early-stage idea? Support from the Dr. Seymour & Rose T. Brown Professorship helped Dr. Rob Gereau turn a bold concept for plant-inspired pain relief into promising drug candidates. It’s a major step toward safer, non-addictive treatments for the 50 million Americans living with chronic pain.

| Leading the nation in anesthesia research

For the second year in a row, WashU Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology earned the No. 1 ranking nationwide in NIH funding — bringing in more than $37.4 million in total research support. Backed by 164 funded projects, our teams are pioneering new non-addictive pain therapies, advancing chronic pain research, and developing life-saving treatments for surgical patients.

Thomas Kannampallil, PhD, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA). His tenure officially begins January 1, 2027.

Highlights from the 38th C.R. Stephen Lecture & Academic Showcase |
The department recently hosted the 38th Annual C.R. Stephen Lecture featuring Max B. Kelz, MD, PhD, from the University of Pennsylvania, whose presentation challenged core assumptions about anesthesia and consciousness. The event coincided with our annual Academic Showcase, featuring over 70 poster presentations across basic, clinical, and translational research.

Inside the ASSURE Fellowship: Inspiring future physician-scientists |
The 2026 Anesthesiology Summer Research (ASSURE) Fellowship recently wrapped up an impactful 10-week cycle. Six undergraduate scholars engaged in hands-on laboratory research, shadowed anesthesiologists in operating rooms at St. Louis Children's Hospital, and showcased their findings at our end-of-summer poster presentation.
