The application for 2025-26 JMC scholarships is open! Current JMC undergrads can apply by going to https://ku.academicworks.com/. Click the red “Sign In” button at the top of the page, then log in with your KU online ID and password.
You may be asked to complete a general questionnaire before moving to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Undergraduate Scholarship Application. Please be sure to complete the correct application, as there are two versions in the system right now. Please do not complete the application for incoming students.
The application deadline is January 24, 2025.

Relax with food, drinks and games ahead of finals week: Students – Do you need a break before moving into finals week? We have you covered! Stop by the Stauffer-Flint Hall lobby on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. We will have grab-and-go drinks and snacks, study break activities and information about other self-care resources.

- Wednesday: Grab a slice of pizza around 11:45 (come get it before it’s gone)!
- Thursday: Nothing says winter like a cocoa bar. Grab a hot drink, some popcorn, and enjoy a holiday movie in the Resource Center in the morning.

JMC alum Elle Peterson spoke to students in JMC 320 about her role as Brand Coordinator for Walz-Tetrick Advertising, on Dec. 3. Peterson discussed the agency’s work with a variety of clients, and she shared her advice for landing jobs and internships in advertising.
The Kansas City Star's Shreyas Laddha visited our Advanced Multimedia Sports Journalism class Dec. 4 to discuss the KU Athletics beat and how to enter the journalism industry.

Students in Assistant Professor of the Practice Alex Treaster’s JMC 640 Campaigns class will present to their client at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Clarkson Gallery. The client is ServiceMaster. Campaigns students are developing recommendations to enhance ServiceMaster’s brand reputation, build awareness and tailor communication to local audiences.
Enter Journalism contest: The Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability recognizes the best work by college journalists on topics related to disabilities. First prize wins $2,500, second place wins $1,500 and third place wins $1,000. Entrants must have been enrolled as a student at the time of publication or broadcast, and the work must have appeared in a university-affiliated publication or program.
Journalists working in digital, print, audio and broadcast media are eligible to enter. Entries must have been published or aired between July 1, 2023, and Dec. 31, 2024. The deadline to enter is Jan. 10, 2025. There is no entry fee, and reporters may self-nominate.

Apply for the Kappa Tau Alpha Scholarship: The deadline to apply is Feb. 1. Send a letter of reference and a 500-word essay to kappataualpha@missouri.edu. The essay should discuss how the Kappa Tau Alpha scholarship will benefit you, including relevant aspects of financial need or status as a first-generation college student. Include details about your career goals in journalism and mass communication and explain how they fit with KTA’s focus on Knowledge, Truth and Accuracy. More details are available here.

Assistant professor Yunwen Wang joined the editorial board of BMC Digital Health, a Springer Nature journal that publishes research on mobile health applications, virtual healthcare, wearable technology, social media and other communications technology. The journal supports the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aimé co-authored the "Proactive vs. reactive: A multi-country analysis of how news media covers AI’s impact on copyright," presentation with the University of North Carolina's Marisa Porto for the Prague Media Point 2024 conference themed "What's Working: Responding to AI-Induced Volatility in the Media" on Nov. 29 in the Czech Republic.

Dole hosting final event of semester: The 2024 National Post-Election Conference Panel will be from 2-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Held biennially after midterm and general elections, the Post Election Conference brings several journalists, practitioners, and experts together to analyze campaigns and election results throughout the country, and what they’ll mean for the next two years. Journalists Molly Ball (The Wall Street Journal), Jonathan Martin (POLITICO) and KU Alum Francesca Chambers (USA Today) will be present at the event at 2350 Petefish Dr.

The Office of the Governor is seeking part-time interns for the spring semester to join the Constituent Services team as part of the Kelly-Toland Administration. Interns will assist with managing casework inquiries, supporting proclamation and public signing ceremonies, working with agency partners, engaging with constituents on policy issues, and tracking constituent feedback.
The role offers the opportunity to learn about state government operations while gaining hands-on experience in communications and public service. Interns will work between 15-25 hours per week at the Statehouse in Topeka with a pay rate of $15.03 per hour.
