NEWS + UPDATES
CNCS Announces 2014-15 Competitive Grantees
On May 7th, CNCS announced $205 million in competitive grant funding to put AmeriCorps members on the ground to tackle critical challenges in communities across the U.S. The grants will allow more than 43,000 Americans the opportunity to serve their country through AmeriCorps. These AmeriCorps members will serve from coast to coast, strengthening education, providing disaster services, fostering economic opportunity, assisting veterans and military families, preserving the environment, and expanding health services.
The 2014 AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive due to the strong demand by organizations competing for AmeriCorps resources. The competition prioritized investments in economic opportunity, education, veterans and military families, disaster services, and an initiative for governors and mayors. The 288 organizations receiving grants include Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, the American Red Cross, YouthBuild, City Year, and Points of Light, as well as many other faith-based and community groups.
In addition to the $205 million in competitive AmeriCorps funding, CNCS is also awarding $115 million in formula funding to governor-appointed state service commissions such as OneStar Foundation. These funds will be awarded this summer to organizations in their states to support additional AmeriCorps members.
Congratulations to our Texas competitive grantees! OneStar looks forward to announcing our Formula-funded grantees and full 2014-15 portfolio in July 2014.

The May topic was “Best Practices for Determining and Documenting Compelling Personal Circumstances.” Presenters touched on the following questions and topics: how to determine whether a member has a compelling personal circumstance; developing policies and procedures; and examples of how member situations were documented.
If you have any follow-up questions on this topic, please contact your OneStar Grants Officers.

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE
Senior Corps Week 2014: Make a Difference in Texas
All this week, CNCS will be shining a spotlight on the impact that Senior Companions (celebrating their 40th anniversary), RSVP, and Foster Grandparents make in small towns and big cities across the country.
To tell their story, CNCS sent cameras to the small town of West, TX, on to Missoula, MT, and finally to New York City. The stories they’ve captured show RSVP volunteers rebuilding a Texas town, Foster Grandparents strengthening schools, and Senior Companions helping veterans and adults with disabilities.
Let’s start the week off with the video Senior Corps: Making A Difference in West, Texas.
Help celebrate Senior Corps Week 2014 by:
  • Watch and share the latest Senior Corps impact videos with everyone you know!
  • Tweeting your support for your local #SeniorCorps programs (and use hashtag #SCWeek in your posts)
  • Thanking your local Senior Companions program for 40 years of service!
Happy Senior Corps Week 2014!
RESOURCES + TRAINING
Civic Reflection Training Services Request Form
OneStar is pleased to periodically offer Civic Reflection training services to grantees, national service programs, and eligible organizations throughout the state of Texas. The two types of services offered are Civic Reflection Discussions and Civic Reflection Facilitation Workshops. Civic reflection uses short, thought-provoking images, video or readings from literature, history, or philosophy to open up important questions in civic life and explore the underlying values and beliefs that drive our shared work in the world. AmeriCorps programs have utilized the practice of civic reflection as a tool in such areas as member development, staff development, and member retention.
To learn more about or to request one of these services, please complete the request form at http://www.tfaforms.com/265963.
