Center for Women's Studies Brown Bag: Chandra Tapalde Mohanty
October 21 | Center for Women's Studies
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
This talk suggests that an insurgent feminist lens requires understanding that racialized gender is key to mapping borders, histories and movements, and asking the question: how and why do women, queer and gender non-conforming people matter in understanding and responding to this moment of global pandemic and protest? Chandra Tapalde Mohanty will ask what an anti-racist, decolonial, anti-capitalist feminist praxis consist of at this time when colonial legacies and global inequities are no longer invisible and building solidariis and movements across borders is more urgent that ever before.

Arts & Humanities Colloquium - "Tokyo's Fever of Empire: A Poet's Diagnosis in 1925"
Tuesday, November 11, 2025 | 105 Lawrence | 4:15-5:45pm
Presented by Nick Albertson, assistant professor of Japanese and Asian Studies council member | The Arts and Humanities Colloquium |
"Tokyo’s Fever of Empire: A Poet’s Diagnosis in 1925.”
In a book-length poem called Tokyo Has Caught a Fever (1925), Takamure Itsue warned of the dangers of anti-Korean sentiment, fascism on Japan's horizon, and the possibility of a second world war. In landscapes that shift cinematically between grand vistas and minute details, she showed sympathy for colonized Koreans in Tokyo and a discerning eye for the different effects of power on the streets of the imperial capital.
