Making the Most of your First-Year Experience Course
Most of you are in a first-year experience course this semester. But, what does that actually mean and what should you get out of the experience?
First-year experience courses (e.g, UNV 101, CEC 101 , BUS 106, MTH 147, etc.) will facilitate your transition to college by introducing key skills and campus resources that enhance academic and co-curricular success. In your first-year experience class, you have the opportunity to connect with faculty, staff, and in most cases, upperclass students called Undergraduate Associates, who are helping out with your class. Take advantage of the tips, tricks, insights, and connections you make in your class. In your first-year experience course, you will:
  • discover services on campus to assist in your academic success
  • build an inclusive, diverse, and respectful community with particular attention to the institutional value Miami has to create an environment in which every student develops a sense of belonging
  • develop an awareness of and proficiency in accessing tools and resources available to assist in your academic planning
  • explore ways in which you can maximize the student life experience
  • navigate career development resources by engaging in career/major exploration and learning about experiences available to students
If you aren't in a first-year experience course, not to worry! You'll receive an email later this week inviting you to a First-Year Experience Canvas course where you'll have the opportunity to participate in unique experiences that are important during your first year. Plus, you'll have an opportunity to connect with a first-year mentor to guide you through your first year.
