It’s time to pivot. This is madness. If we focus 90% of our efforts on protecting the vulnerable — and we all know and love someone in this cohort, we will make huge strides in extinguishing this covid dumpster fire. Why haven’t we stood up real time monitoring of patients admitted to hospitals and emergency rooms? Why are we not using well-known (look at Europe and Asia) evidence-based testing and tracing strategies. Masks? I’ll get to that later.
The bottom line is we need to build public confidence through clear, coherent communication and explain the science of covid-19 in the same objective, yet empathic way a doctor explains disease. It all boils down to math.
The Hippocratic Oath leads with, "first, do no harm." It appears as though our leaders have taken the Hypocritical Oath which apparently says, "Harm, what’s a little harm?"
To be clear, much of the harm done is caused by communication and more specifically, the communication of science.
While I am cautiously optimistic about the latest rumblings from the scientific community vis-a-vis vaccines and treatments, we must get used to the new normal of life with COVID. The concept of life after COVID is currently a mirage.
Let’s get to it.
