Spotlight on IAS Faculty Affiliates
We would like to feature two faculty members in this newsletter:
Dr. Stephen Wadley, Professor of Chinese in the Department of World Languages and Literatures and a former Director of the IAS
&
Dr. Geoffrey Duh, Associate Professor of Geography
Stephen Wadley
Professor of World Languages and Literatures
Dr. Stephen Wadley, a well-known expert of Manchu and a former Director of the Institute for Asian Studies at Portland State University, worked as a faculty member in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at PSU since 1991. When asked about how he became interested in Chinese, his answer was that it was “somewhat by accident.” After one year of college he was sent to Taiwan by the church his family belonged to on a proselytizing mission for two years. However, he quickly found himself so interested in Chinese, and changed his major from mathematics to Chinese and just continued on with it.
Dr. Wadley retired after 33 years of service at PSU in 2024, but his passion for Chinese and support for the Institute will stay with us. Congratulations on your retirement – you will be missed!

A bit about yourself:
I grew up in Taiwan and received my geography BS and MS degrees from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan. Before coming to the US for my doctoral education, I worked as a geographic information system (GIS) project manager in a GIS consultant company for several years. Upon the completion of my PhD degree in Natural Resources & Environment from the University of Michigan, I was hired to strengthen the GIS curriculum at PSU. I am an associate professor in Geography and serve as director for both the Graduate GIS Certificate program and the newly developed MS in GIS program. My research focuses on developing GIS theory and applications in spatial decision-making to support land-use planning, emergency planning, and resource management. The focus of my teaching and research is not limited to any specific region. Some of my recent research projects are related to water resource management in the western US.
What the IAS and Asian Studies community means to you:
Having traveled to many Asian countries, I have developed a deep appreciation and curiosity for the diverse Asian cultures. Through IAS and the Asian Studies community, I hope to share such appreciation and curiosity, which I believe benefits people from all cultural backgrounds in developing more holistic and inclusive worldviews. IAS is a unique and invaluable resource for PSU communities to learn about, experience, and celebrate Asian culture. I am proud to be a member of the IAS and Asian Studies community and look forward to the opportunities to serve PSU students, faculty, and staff, as well as the greater Portland community through Asian Studies programming and events.
What you hope for IAS and PSU:
PSU is an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). This designation provides a great opportunity for IAS to connect PSU students and faculty, not only to Asian cultures, but also some of our students’ cultural heritage. My hope is for IAS to expand its role in engaging students and faculty to appreciate the rich cultural heritages from Asia and gain a sense of belonging through, for example, PSU’s study abroad and visiting scholar programs.
