Mongan ReflectionsFrom the Director
| |
Rapid, responsive health care delivery team science is not only possible, but a reality. As demonstrated at this year’s MGH Scientific Advisory Committee, our research community rapidly responded to the challenge of COVID-19 with lightening speed spanning bench to bedside to community (and beyond). Examples of the extraordinary work by Mongan Institute researchers described on our COVID website, and across MGH, were featured in a two-hour session titled “COVID Lessons Learned: Scientific and Community Impact”. The first part of the session began with a focus on the adverse impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable junior research faculty summarizing a commentary by Dr. Katrina Armstrong in the New England Journal of Medicine (Link here). Building on the theme of developing the next generation, Dr. Long Nguyen and Aswita Tan-McGrory described the rapid creation of the COVID-Corps research internship program pairing undergraduate and graduate students with Mongan faculty mentors. The lively discussion that ensued underscored the future pipeline of diverse researches as a strategic priority at MGH.
The second part of the session provided examples of how population and health care delivery research was rapidly deployed to quickly contribute to the knowledge base on the course and impact of COVID-19. Examples included presentations on an innovative mobile App developed to collect real-time epidemiological data in an international COVID consortium; development of a Mass General Brigham COVID-19 patient registry to support future research on the course and long-term impact of COVID-19; and efforts to inform COVID-19 public health interventions through simulation modeling. Examples of applied health care delivery science included research on COVID-19 health disparities; global health equity research; and initiatives addressing the COVID-related mental health challenges in the workforce. Appropriately, the session closed with a panel discussion of research focused on vulnerable populations by junior faculty investigators (For descriptions and list of presenters see link here).
While we pause to celebrate the extraordinary rapid advances over the past year, the pressing future challenge is to replicate the “lightening in the bottle” of rapid and responsive health care delivery research to address the greatest threats to our health and to our society. A Mongan-wide health equity research initiative is underway to make a real difference in real-time. To learn more see (Link here).
