| CFAAC COMMUNITY CONNECTOR - AUGUST 2022
| |
A Message From our President & CEO
As summer winds to an end, we have much to share—first, our Celebration of Philanthropy nominations have been extended to August 5, 2022. This is our signature event of the year, and we can’t wait to honor Anne Arundel County’s most dedicated and generous people. If you haven’t already, please take the time to nominate someone for their service to our county. Read more about this event and other upcoming events in this newsletter.
August is also National Make A Will Month. Creating a meaningful estate plan is of vital importance to everyone, regardless of your estate size. The legacy of love that you leave your family and the causes you care about can be comforting as well as inspiring to others.
The Community Foundation is increasingly working with donors on their legacy planning. It is such rewarding work for us, knowing that we are helping others feel peace of mind after they put their plans in place. As always, we are here to guide and support prospective, new, and existing fund holders in this work, free of charge. Read more about legacy giving here.
Enjoy your final days of summer,
Mary Spencer President & CEO

August is National Make a Will Month

For the late Cherie Loustaunau making a will was of upmost importance. As a diligent, disciplined, and compassionate woman, Cherie needed to make sure everyone and everything she loved in life was taken care of after she was gone. For example, Cherie had a strong interest in young people so she set up educational investment funds for her eight great nephews and nieces. As a dedicated philanthropist, Cherie also wanted to make sure she supported the organizations that she loved throughout her life. In her will, she left gifts to several organizations including the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
For many, like Cherie, a will is a final statement to what was important to them in their lives, a final opportunity to make sure their wishes are realized and that they continue to champion the organizations they cared about most in their lifetimes. Yet, according to a Caring.com survey, nearly two-thirds of Americans do not have a will.
Without a will, important decisions such as who receives assets and how property will be divided up will be decided by the state of Maryland. Care for minor children and pets will be left up to a court. Creating a will can not only save loved ones time, stress, and money; but also, can specify how to support favorite causes, as Cherie did. Read more about Cherie and Make A Will Month.

August is National “Make a Will” Month! Do you have a will? Research tells us that less than half of Americans do. If you don’t have your own will or estate plan, the state of Maryland has one for you and it may not match your wishes or assumptions. Join Rosemary Calderalo, Ph.D., CFAAC’s Director of Gift Planning, for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Presentation and how to get started in your planning and learn how you can also make provisions for charities in your will or estate plan on Thursday, August 11th at 12 noon.

Wednesday, September 28, 2022 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Via Zoom
Adolescent girls today tend to be more prone to depression and self-harm than ever before. It is this disturbing trend that led award-winning author Donna Jackson Nakazawa to research the science behind this growing crisis, interview girls about their adolescent experiences, investigate supportive solutions, and write about it in her new book, Girls on the Brink: Helping Our Daughters Thrive in an Era of Increased Anxiety, Depression, and Social Media.
This event is open to the public and event tickets are $40. All ticketed attendees will receive a copy of the book, Girls on the Brink: Helping Our Daughters Thrive in an Era of Increased Anxiety, Depression, and Social Media, published by Random House/Harmony. Attendees will also receive a free gift -- a Book Club Kit, which includes a Q&A with Donna, to use for their own book club! The book, designed to be a guide for parents, families, and all to help secure a healthy emotional inner life for our young girls, will be published on September 13, 2022, and all participants who register by September 21 will receive their books in time for the event. Back to basics: Reminding Clients About Wills, Trusts, and Charitable Bequests
August is National Make a Will Month, and the publicity surrounding this designation may prompt your clients to ask you about whether their affairs are in good order. Of course, making sure a client has established an estate plan and executed corresponding legal documents is a priority for any attorney, accountant, or financial advisor who practices in the field of estate planning, tax, or wealth management. Still, it’s always helpful to remind clients to keep their estate plans up to date and review their plans with you on a regular basis.
| |
Farms, Tax Planning, and Funding a Family Legacy
Given that there are more than two million farms in the United States, many advisors have at least one client who owns farm property. Although the number of farms has been dropping slowly since 2000, there are still millions of dollars invested in farms as agricultural land continues to be valuable. This is why it’s important to explore philanthropic options with your clients who own farmland.
