You can't exercise your way out of a bad dietCongratulations to SPARTAN Co-convenor A/Prof Melody Ding on her fantastic new paper that has attracted substantial media coverage. The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, examined the diets and exercise patterns of 360,600 British adults over the course of 11 years and has been picked up by 56 news outlets!

FMH HDR ConferenceA big thanks to all the SPARTANs involved in the FMH HDR conference! Our co-convenor A/Prof Kieron Rooney was part of the Networks panel and did an excellent job at highlighting the importance of being a part of networks for your research and career. Dr Marnee Mckay chaired the FMH EMCR panel network discussion and Q&A.

Helen O'Connor Symposium: Highlighting women's research in sports, dietetics and physical activity.
Wednesday 10th August, 2pm - 5pm, F23 Auditorium (Hybrid Zoom available)
Join us for this special in-person event, in honour friend and colleague Associate Professor Helen O’Connor. Helen was a strong and significant leader of health and nutrition, with incredible impact and reach until her very sad passing due to ovarian cancer in 2020.
We are pleased to have her colleagues and fellow researchers share their knowledge around a theme close to her heart – women’s research in sports, dietetics, and physical activity.
- Nikki Jeacocke, Senior Sports Dietitian and Disordered Eating Lead at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Nikki will discuss her specialist expertise working with athletes in the early identification, prevention and management of disordered eating and eating disorders.
- Geraldine Wallbank, PhD candidate at the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health. Geraldine has developed and pilot-tested the Active Women over 50 program, desgined for women in middle age to increase their physical activity so that they have better function and quality of life in older age.
- Dr Janelle Gifford, on behalf of Drs Ryan Tam and Louise Capling and the ASNAP development team. Introducing the Accelerated Sports Nutrition Assessment Platform: a project led by Associate Professor Helen O’Connor
Registrations are free, but essential. All are welcome, in-person or online. For in-person attendees, afternoon tea and refreshments will be provided from 4pm onwards.
