CONHI MRHE Lab Researcher Aims to Address Maternal Health Among Black Women
Dr. Dallas Peoples, a Rise 100 Postdoctoral Fellow and Maternal Health Research Scientist, joined the UTA Maternal and Reproductive Health Equity Research (MRHE) Lab in 2025. Since then, she has worked alongside MRHE Lab Director Dr. Kyrah Brown and several other team members, to research and address inequities that impact the health of Black and other racially minoritized people.
Peoples has worked on several different projects addressing maternal health, and is currently leading a mixed methods research study on severe pregnancy complications among Black women and post partem well-being. Additionally, she is leading a scoping review on the impact of post partem Doulas on maternal health.
Peoples cites personal experience as the primary reason she chose a career in this field. In 2015, one of her relatives passed away due to a pregnancy-related complication. Around the same time, Peoples’ sister experienced severe pre-eclampsia and organ failure during her pregnancy. “This is a problem,” says Peoples. “I just had a relative who died from this and my sister almost died from it. I really wanted to understand why this is happening and what can be done to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality rates among Black women.”
Peoples believes the work has become a truly rewarding experience. “I get to do what I love every day,” she says. “This is not only something I’m passionate about, but it’s become my purpose.”
