Be the "eyes and ears" for mental health
Doing farm visits this summer? Be the “eyes and ears” of your clients and make sure you know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge. A few indicators of a mental health concern include:
- Decline in the appearance of the farm.
- Increase in accidents, illness, or other chronic conditions.
- Decreased interest in activities or hobbies.
If you notice a change, start the conversation by:
- Sharing what you’re noticing.
- Asking how they are doing.
- Expressing your concern.
- Offering to listen.
- Referring them to professional help.
You can start with something as simple as, “It sounds like some things are really hard right now, how are you coping?”
If they are open to talking with a professional, here are two options from the Farm Center you can share:

- Tele-Counseling: Free, confidential, and unlimited sessions online or by telephone.
- In-Person Counseling: Vouchers to cover the cost of obtain counseling services from participating providers
By being aware, offering your support, and referring as needed, you can make a difference in the mental health of the farmers in Wisconsin.
