COVER STORY
TMA's efforts at the Capitol, which began with a changing of the guard in state leadership, and despite challenges, is shaping up to end in overall positive change for physicians and patients. Medicine's successes are likely to include: a big boost for graduate medical education funding; fairer Medicaid fraud rules; greater transparency in health plans sold on the federal exchange; first-ever regulation of youth access to e-cigarettes; and a tax break for all physicians.
QUALITY - Attention EHR's  & HIT
Medicare began paying for chronic care management as of Jan. 1.  This story will explain how physicians can use the CCM code to bill for non-face-to-face time they spend on activities like medication reconciliation, referrals and follow-ups.  We'll explain the lengthy program requirements for physicians to participate, the first of which is having an electronic health records system. The financial gains can be substantial enough to outweigh the hassle of getting started.
PRACTICE MANAGEMENT -  Attention EHR's  & HIT
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT recently funded a UTHealth project to measure the usability and workflow of electronic health records, and how usability ties in to patient safety. The project, known as SHARPC, involved 11 academic medical institutions and health researchers, As part of SHARPC, researchers observed doctors using EHRs and, according to a 400-page book resulting from the project's research, the results "demonstrated a number of usability problems and lengthy task completion times." Texas Medicine takes a deeper look at the results of the project and what recommendations or potential lessons might result.
Additional stories to be covered are law, economics and Public Health.
