Fall 2026 Campus Transportation Update |
|
|
|
Dear Sophomores,
As you start looking ahead to your junior year, we wanted to share some important information about transportation and parking.
Car free is the way to be: As you know, most students don’t need a car for daily life. Tufts and the surrounding Medford/Somerville area are walkable, well-connected, and easy to get around without owning a vehicle. A pedestrian and transit-oriented lifestyle is part of the college experience. And using transportation modes other than driving reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Getting Around (No Car Needed) |
If you are considering having a car, now is the time to carefully think through the benefits and the challenges.
|
Living in University Housing |
-
Juniors and seniors in university housing can apply for a residential student parking permit. Fall 2026 permits will be available for purchase starting in August.
-
Student parking lots/areas are highlighted on the parking map. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis.
|
-
Starting in fall 2026, juniors living off campus cannot park overnight on campus, even with a permit.
- If you are thinking about keeping a car off-campus, you’ll need to arrange parking on your own. This requires preparation.
|
- If you are planning to park off-street at your off-campus residence, make sure your lease entitles you to a parking spot, talk with your roommates about how you will handle tandem parking, and note that Medford and Somerville have ordinances prohibiting parking in front yards, grass, or anywhere other than in a driveway. The cities also prohibit cars parked in driveways from obstructing sidewalks.
- If you are planning to get an on-street parking permit from the city where you live, it’s important to know that Somerville, Medford, and most other cities in our area will not issue permits to cars that have out-of-state license plates. Be sure that you understand all state and local laws and ordinances if you decide to bring a vehicle next year.
-
Additionally, if you are not a Massachusetts resident, whether you park on or off campus, you are required to complete a Nonresident Student Driver Statement with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
|
Between walking, transit, shuttles, biking, and car‑share options, many students find it easier, cheaper, and more sustainable to go car‑free. In line with the university’s sustainability goals, we encourage you to stay car free next year.
