WHV RESIDENTS PARTICIPATE  IN SHAWSVILLE INDEPENDENCE DAY 5K
John Hillison, Yuriko Renardy, Mike Spears and Richard Shepherd all placed in their age groups in the Shawsville Independence Day 5K run. Shepherd says none of the runners had met until they moved to Warm Hearth Village and participated together in various events. They plan to enter future races in the New River Valley and encourage other residents to join them. “We like supporting charities through our entry fees. We’ll spread the word about upcoming races in case other resident runners are interested," says Shepherd.
NEW MISSION, VISION & VALUES
Thank you to all our stakeholders who participated in the development of our 2019 Strategic Plan.  We value your collaboration and believe we have created a strong mission, vision, values and strategic goals to guide our efforts over the next five years. Be on the lookout for more detailed information about our new Strategic Plan in the near future!
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE DEMENTIA FRIENDS EFFORT?
As you may have heard, Warm Hearth Village has succeeded in becoming Virginia’s first Dementia Friendly business. Our next goal is to make Blacksburg a Dementia Friendly town.  If you are interested in joining our efforts to create a community where residents are able to identify and provide support to those living with dementia, here are some opportunities to get involved:

1.)    Become a Dementia Friend.  Attend a
45-minute training session designed to help you learn more about dementia, recognize the signs and identify actions you can take to help someone in your community.  Warm Hearth offers Dementia Friends training or you can visit dementiafriendsusa.org to complete an online training session.

2.)    Become a Dementia Friends Champion.  Take your commitment one step further by becoming a trainer.  Upon completion of training, you will be certified to offer the Dementia Friends training mentioned above to others in the community, including employees, civic groups, family, neighbors, etc. As a Dementia Friends Champion, you can help Warm Hearth spread the word deep into the community for a greater impact.  A three-hour training session for those intersted in becoming Dementia Friends Champions will be offered at Warm Hearth Village.

Monday, August 26 - 9am to 12 Noon
The Village Center, 2387 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg

HEATWAVES AND RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
This summer, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has received increased reports of respiratory illness across the Commonwealth. Recent illnesses have mainly affected adults aged 65 years or older, persons with chronic medical conditions, (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and those with weakened immune systems. With high temperatures in the forecast, VDH is also concerned about the exacerbation of lung or heart disease and other heat-related illnesses. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to minimize disease severity and further transmission. Should you fall victim to the effects of all this heat, call Warm Hearth at Home at 443-3428 to learn how our Home Health services can help get you back on track!

STEVE'S SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIP
The focus for this month is recycling properly in Montgomery County.
Key points:
  1. It is very important to recycle properly because the waste authority has a threshold (~12%) of acceptable ‘contamination’ (non-recyclables) that a load of recycling can contain. This means that if the contamination exceeds this amount, the entire load is diverted to trash. Therefore it's best to remember, "when in doubt, throw it out!"

  2. Only #1 and #2 plastics are accepted! All other plastics go in the trash. (There ARE places that recycle the other numbers, but none that I am aware of in our area.) If you cannot read the number, it's best to throw it out.

  3. One of the biggest issues/recycling contaminants is people putting their recycling in plastic bags. Plastic bags are not recyclable! During the initial sorting done by a human on an excavator with a grapple bucket, recycling contained in a bag will be removed and diverted to trash. Instead, use a paper bag to collect your recyclables and ensure they are actually recycled.

  4. Despite the beleif of some, shredded paper, tissues, paper towels, napkins, and similar items cannot be recycled.

    Sustainably,

    Steve Watkins, Production Manager
