Election Day is November 7 |

Dear Student,
Election Day is just three weeks away—on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Many places in the U.S. have elections for municipal or state-level offices on this date, even though there is no federal election this year. In our neighborhood, Somerville, Medford, and Boston are all holding elections this cycle.
If you are a U.S. citizen who is 18 years old or over on election day, you are eligible to vote. We encourage every eligible student to vote—civic engagement is in our DNA at Tufts. Here’s how you can:
|
-
If you haven’t already, register to vote. You can choose to register where you live now (on or near campus) or at your permanent address. If you’re not sure if you have registered or not, you can check your registration status. The deadline to register is October 27 (Somerville and Medford) or October 28 (Boston).
-
Learn about the candidates and the issues that are on the ballot. The city or town where you are voting has a website with a sample ballot so you can see what offices are up for election and who the candidates are. Usually googling the candidates will give you their campaign materials, video from debates or candidate forums, and news coverage. You can also check out the Center for State Policy Analysis, Ballotpedia, and other nonpartisan sources of information.
-
Make a plan to vote. If you are voting in Massachusetts, you have the option to request a mail in ballot, to vote in person early, or to vote on election day. You can find your MA polling place. If you are voting at your permanent address, check out the deadlines to request an absentee ballot in your state. Absentee ballots are done via U.S. Mail, so you should request yours now.
- Cast your ballot! Whether by mail or in person, casting your ballot is a great way to participate in your community and make your voice heard. If you use an absentee ballot or vote by mail, be sure to mail it so it arrives by election day.

There’s tons more information about how to register, how to research, and how to vote available at JumboVote.org.
If you are not eligible to vote, there are many other ways to get involved in your community. You can find your civic pathway and check out the political and advocacy student organizations.
