Student Affairs Colleagues,
Can you believe it is August? I say this often, and I mean it: August is one of my favorite months of the year. If you were able to attend our divisional kick-off event on August 1, you will know this is because the month, activities, and community connect me to my why — our students! I have been in higher education for more than 30 years and welcoming new students and families to campus never gets old. As you complete your move-in shifts (please reference the email sent from Rob Wild and Sheryl Mauricio on Saturday, August 5 for more information), I hope you take a moment to engage with families and enjoy the moment.
We covered a lot of information on August 1! Because of this, I am including a link to a Box folder that contains the majority of PowerPoints. This information is great to have on hand and reference throughout the year as initiatives move along. Note: if a PowerPoint is not included in that folder it is because we do not have the green light to distribute widely.
While I will see many of you over the next month, our September Divisional meeting will be in Risa Commons on the South 40 on Wednesday, September 13 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Light refreshments begin at 8 a.m. with a formal welcome starting at 8:30 a.m. For a list of our 2023-2024 key dates, please see here.
Enjoy your last few weeks of summer and thank you in advance for all you will do during the 2023-2024 academic year to support our students.
Warmly,
|

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Student Affairs Marketing & Communications updates |
Student Affairs Bulletin Board
We are now accepting submissions from all departments in Student Affairs to be highlighted on a prominent bulletin board located across from the Orchid Room on the DUC first floor. Use this form to submit your content. Please edit your content to be less than 100 words and include images, web URL’s and any other applicable information in your submission. We will not be designing individual flyers for the events featured. All submissions will be compiled into one comprehensive and visually appealing design to cover the whole bulletin board surface with the goal of promoting many great events and initiatives occurring across the Division.
Due to necessary lead time, please submit your entries to us by the second Friday of each month. Starting in October, we will update the board monthly from October 2023 to May 2024. Questions? Email studentaffairscomms@wustl.edu.
Graphic Design Support is Now OPEN!
The Student Affairs Marketing and Communications Office (SA MarComm) is here to support your marketing and communications needs. As of August 1, graphic design assistance is now being offered. In addition to graphic design, departments can submit project requests on our webpage for assistance with web edits, campaign strategy, event photography and copywriting. For more information on services offered, please visit our website.

Campus Life invites you to list your departmental events, programs, and activities in the First 40. The First 40 highlights events that happen during the first 40 days (August 28-October 6) of the fall semester.
First 40 aims to provide opportunities for students to get involved and engaged with Campus Life and to start exploring their new home. We know the first few weeks of a student’s time in college are incredibly important as they adjust to being away from home, finding and building community and discovering their interests and passions.
Offices and departments are invited to submit events to be highlighted starting on August 14.
To submit your event:
1. Fill out the form on Washington University Group Organizer (WUGO). This in an internal form for the Campus Life office.
2. After completing the form, you must fill out a WUGO Event Registration form to make the event public to students. (Make sure you select a “First 40” category in the “Tag” list). If you can’t access the WUGO Event Registration form, please email Will Atchinson and he will assist with an account login.

Help us tell the Student Affairs story! |
Student Affairs Marketing & Communications is looking to connect with students to help tell the Student Affairs story. Do you know a student with a unique campus experience? Or a student who has utilized a Student Affairs resource to help them excel? Let us know! Our team would love to connect with them, hear their story and share it across the WashU community.
If you have story ideas or know of students who would be excellent subjects in a Student Affairs story, please contact Jennifer Ferguson with the student’s name, preferred contact information and a short synopsis of why you think they should be featured. Note: the student’s photo and story will be shared on the students.wustl.edu homepage under the “We are WashU” section.

A time-honored tradition at WashU, Convocation is the official academic welcome to the university. All WashU administration and faculty who attend the event wear the same academic regalia during Convocation as they do at Commencement. The academic dress worn by faculty and degree candidates originates in the clerical robes worn by students and teachers at the earliest medieval universities.

To read more about the Code of Academic Dress used at the WashU Convocation and Commencement Ceremonies, visit our website.
This year, Convocation will take place on Saturday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. Students will join the chancellor, provost, deans, and vice chancellor for student affairs (our very own Dr. G!) in Brookings Quad along with their classmates in the Class of 2027.
