DEAN'S MESSAGE
Dear CONHI Community,
First and foremost, I would like to share my congratulations to our recent graduates who completed their degrees this spring semester. Graduation is always an exciting time as we celebrate the culmination of our students' hard work and dedication to becoming health care professionals.
It was exciting to see so many of our graduates attend the in-person commencement ceremony, and I was pleased we were able to honor our 2020 graduates with an in-person ceremony as well.
I encourage our recent, and all, alumni to stay connected with CONHI, follow us on social media, join our events, and share your story to graduation and beyond so that we might profile you on our website and show students all the possibilities and opportunities a degree from CONHI brings.
This has been an encouraging time as the vaccine continues to roll out across the state and country. And I am excited looking ahead, as UTA plans for Fall 2021 classes back on campus, as well as for in-person student activities and events.

All the best,
Dean Elizabeth Merwin, PhD, RN, FAAN

RESEARCHER WORKING TO FIGHT OPIOID EPIDEMIC IMPACTING CHILDREN

“Over time, we have learned more and more kids are often overlooked in trying to address the opioid epidemic,” shares Dr. Kristin Gigli.
Researcher and Assistant Professor in Nursing Kristin Gigli will begin a new project this summer to explore the screening and referral of adolescents for opioid use disorder and treatment in Dallas and Tarrant County. “This research is an opportunity to see how policies might impact students in Texas,” said Dr. Gigli.
“I plan to interview school principals, guidance counselors, and school nurses in Dallas and Tarrant County to learn about current practices related to screening and their process for referral to treatment for opioid use disorder, and barriers and facilitators to these practices.”

UNIQUE COURSE ON HUMAN FACTORS IN PATIENT SAFETY

“We’re not standing around still, repeating the same thing for 30 years. New generations of nurses have different inspirations, and nurses are taking on the role of leading quality and safety improvement in hospitals,” shared Dr. Yan Xiao, professor in Nursing in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation.

Quality and safety are pivotal in the health care profession, and yet for many years formalized courses and in-depth professional training into such topics have been a missing link. Thanks to a unique course developed by patient safety expert Dr. Yan Xiao and his colleagues, students can now gain more experience into how to provide the safest and highest quality of care to patients.

“Health care is constantly evolving, and this course is an example how our College innovates to meet those new demands, including learning about human factors in order to be more patient-centered and to be effective patient safety champions,” said Dr. Xiao. “We’ve set out to make a difference and help our students be change agents.” The course is one of the first credited undergraduate courses on human factors offered in health professional schools.
