Mental Health Tip
As the weather gets colder and the semester keeps going, you might notice that you need motivation to do things. One thing you can do today to improve your motivation is to be mindful of how you talk to yourself. Sometimes we can be our own worst critics saying things like “I should be studying right now,” “I’m so lazy,” “I can’t do anything right.” Talking this way can make us frustrated with ourselves and works against our motivation. Try extending kindness to yourself. No need to beat yourself up; be your friend who is willing to help you through difficult times. We call this self-compassion and it involves being understanding and non-judgmental of yourself. To learn more about the importance of self-compassion and how to practice self-compassion, visit the University Counseling Center website.

Financial Wellness Tip: Finances can be tricky to understand when it comes to loans, grants, work study, scholarships, student employment, and budgeting. Luckily, MoneySmart Lakers can help you learn how to manage your money and the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships can help you maximize your financial investment in school. Or if you’re seeking a job for some extra dough, you can visit the Career Center for support.

University Counseling Center, Let's Talk, a space to talk about mental health and wellbeing

Program Spotlight:

Let's Talk

Let’s Talk is a drop-in service for students that offers informal, confidential consultations with a counselor from the University Counseling Center. This might work best for those who are hesitant about reaching out for formal counseling services or those who would like to share about a specific situation. There are both general Let’s Talk times open to all enrolled GV students as well as Let’s Talk: Black Mental Health, which allows Black students the opportunity to consult with a Black counselor. Let’s Talk is not formal counseling, thus visits are not documented, except in emergency situations.

Let’s Talk is not appropriate for urgent concerns or mental health emergencies.
