It’s my absolute pleasure as the newly appointed Executive Director Surveying and Spatial to write this foreword from the land of the Woi-wurrung people.
In the 4 weeks I’ve been part of the Spatial and Surveying team here at Land Use Victoria I’ve been blown away by the scale, innovation and creativity of projects underway. The passion of the people I work with, and the highly collaborative nature of the environment, is truly humbling.
This is a very exciting time for surveying and spatial. Much of what we do underpins key sectors including emergency services and disaster resilience, climate change, driverless cars, smart cities and more. In particular, the space sector is expanding, offering an unprecedented quality and quantity of spatial data, and artificial intelligence and machine learning are driving spatial analytics towards solving increasingly complex problems.
The future is intelligent, distributed and very much about people and the diverse ways we will use data into the future. Where spatial is concerned, we see research converging with applications more than ever, and when we talk about impact, the difference across the sectors is blurred – we’re all on the same journey together.
I was drawn to this role by current projects and the agenda that’s being set. In joining Land Use Victoria I feel like I’m on an adventure and want to share my excitement for the work ahead.
Projects underway show how the State Government is leading the digital revolution and positioning itself on the global stage. Our Digital Twin Victoria (DTV) program is an absolute gamechanger. A 3D/4D model of the state with enough quality and information to support visualisation of complex decision making – imagine the possibilities.
Our Digital Cadastral Modernisation (DCM) program – a huge challenge and critical to our cadastral strategy – has 70% of the state’s land parcels now digitised. The team has also released a Readiness Toolkit to help organisations prepare for change.
None of these mega projects would be achievable without the dedicated teams creating and managing the foundation products that are the backbone of Victoria's spatial industries.
I’m excited about taking my own background in geodesy and satellite positioning, combining it with these crucial pieces of work, and leveraging the two to support some of the major challenges facing society today. I believe in true collaboration between industry, academia and government, and in the surveying and spatial team we are on track.
Map it Out is a fantastic way for us all to stay connected. This edition is filled with many updates on what we’re delivering – I’m truly excited to be part of the team and look forward to collaborating with you all.
Best regards
Allison Kealy
