Honoring Resilience, Courage & Hope on World Refugee Day

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we observe World Refugee Day on June 20th, we at Survivors of Torture, International are deeply honored to stand in solidarity with the more than 120 million displaced individuals worldwide. This day is a poignant reminder of the courage, strength, and perseverance that refugees demonstrate every day.
World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 to raise awareness about the plight of refugees and to honor their strength and courage. It marks a global effort to recognize the rights, needs, and dreams of refugees, while also mobilizing political will and resources to help them. World Refugee Day serves as a reminder of the global responsibility to support and protect those who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, and violence.

Celebrating Resilience
This year, our Annual Event held in June was dedicated to honoring World Refugee Day. It was a heartfelt gathering where we celebrated the incredible resilience of our clients and acknowledged the struggles and triumphs of displaced individuals globally. The event brought together staff, supporters, community partners, and SURVIVORS' clients, creating a space of unity and shared purpose.

Keynote Address: Words of Hope
We were privileged to hear from Nicodemus Lim, a fomer SURVIVORS client and one of our esteemed keynote speakers, who delivered a powerful message that resonated deeply with all attendees. As he eloquently put it:
"The world will celebrate World Refugee Day on June 20th. New and former refugees are among us in our communities. They are our neighbors. These human beings were forced to flee for their lives leaving their homes behind and everything they love. Conflict, war, or persecution uprooted them. A refugee’s journey to safety is long, tedious, and dangerous.
To see another day, one must have courage, strength, perseverance, and hope. A hope that things will get better. You may not know how, where, and when things will get better.
This hope for the unknown keeps you going until things get better.
The key here is not to give up."
Nicodemus's words remind us of the profound journey that refugees undertake and the unyielding hope that sustains them. His message serves as an inspiration for all of us to continue our support and advocacy for these resilient individuals.
As we honor World Refugee Day, let us remember that refugees are not just numbers; they are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and friends. Together, we can help them not only survive but thrive in their new communities.
