Notre Dame computer scientists receive NSF award to reduce opioid misuse through improved nutrition

Although opioid users are offered medication assisted treatment (MAT), which can effectively reduce opioid misuse and addiction, diet is an important—and often overlooked—factor in opioid recovery.
University of Notre Dame computer scientists within the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and the College of Engineering have received an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the development of a new machine learning framework which will offer personalized dietary recommendations.

Nitesh Chawla, Founding Director of the Lucy Institute for Data & Society and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, was welcomed to present at the Hong Kong University Institute of Data Science as part of their Distinguished Speaker Series.
Chawla discussed navigating the research convergence for innovation to translation journey, and also the opportunities and challenges to truly realize the potential of data science / AI for society.

The Trustworthy AI Lab for Education Summit (TALES) at Notre Dame rallies an international community of psychologists, computer scientists, learning scientists, ethicists, education researchers and practitioners, and industry leaders to decipher how to build and harness effective and trusted AI solutions for education.
Call For Proposals:
We are calling for two types of proposals, one for the poster session, and the other for research talks. Proposal submission information can be found at lucyinstitute.nd.edu/TALES. All presenters will need to participate in person.
The deadline for submission of a 300-word abstract is Wednesday, Nov 1.

| Responsible Computing Challenge Student Opportunities

An interdisciplinary team of Notre Dame faculty from the College of Arts & Letters and the College of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering are building new courses and reimagining existing courses in responsible computing at Notre Dame through the Mozilla Foundation's Responsible Computing Challenge.
This team is invested in approaches that center the voices of those most directly impacted by inequitable structures of power. They are especially interested in a global-oriented approach on Global South perspectives.
To support this work, the team seeks graduate and undergraduate student fellows. Prior experience is not needed- Individuals who are new to this conversation but care about these questions are welcome to apply through this form.
